I was the tallest 3rd grade kid in school (in the Middle East), so the basketball coach kept pushing me to give the sport a go. When I finally did, I became kind of obsessed, and I started following the NBA. Back then, my only source was a European channel that televised 2 games every Sunday. I would follow those religiously.
I did not have a favorite team at first. Then one day, I saw a Jazz v Lakers game where Utah played beautifully and got the win. I still remember how awed I was to see Stockton run back after a turnover, and draw a charge against the Lakers' 3 against 1 fast break. I remember Stockton to Malone running the PnR over and over and over, and I remember the commentator saying that everyone knew the PnR was coming, but nobody knew what to do about it. I loved the fact that the Jazz' strength came from perfectly executed tactics that depended on harmonious cohesion across the entire squad. I then bought a Malone jersey, and started wearing it to practice. I became known for being a Jazz fan, and that created a sort of emotional investment that further entrenched my fanhood.
When I began applying to schools, U of U and BYU were on top of my list, because that's where the Jazz played. And that was that.
Anyone who plans their future around their love of Jazz Basketball and moves across the world to do so, and then endures 4 years as an atheist among a brazillion Mormons deserves to be crowned as King Jazz Fan of World.
You're a Jazz fan because you also went to the triple overtime Bulls game where Jordan got ejected with tickets your parents got for free buying a used car from LHM? Wow. Were you also sitting behind a guy bagging on Eaton the whole game who left at the end of the third qtr so he could beat traffic since there was no way the Jazz could win? That would be super crazy.
Yep.
@PG_AB I love Wilson Chandler, would love to have him. He's Lebron w/o the basketball skills. Lebron-esque size/strength/athleticism though. What's John Starks up to these days?
Can you juxtapose the highlighted part against what's it like watching the Jazz play?
Please put more emphasis on the jazz during the Corbin era.
First ever NBA team I saw was Atlanta Hawks when they visited former USSR in 1988. NBA games where never to be found on local TV at that time and only after Hawks visit they started showing occasional NBA games on TV ( replay's of course as there was no live NBA games on local TV ) until 1997. I remember then in 1992 seeing one Jazz game vs Hawks and I was so surprised at how great Jazz played, I think they won by 5 pts or so but Malone and Stockton and Jazz team oriented game and execution was just something I have never seen before. Then of course it was 1992 Olympics and dream team which got me hooked into NBA like never before. Unfortunately we still had no internet or live NBA games and all we got was occasional replies or NBA TV's week in NBA or some kind of 30 min highlight show... I remember cheering for Jazz in WCF vs Seattle in 1996 when they were down 1-3 and Malone commented on " stick the fork in them" by saying something along the lines " it is not done yet and be careful not to choke on it", they won next two games but lost game 7 by 4 pts.
Then of course biggest turning point was 1997 and 98 finals and amazing playoff wins vs Lakers, Spurs, Houston. That was the first time games were live on TV and I was waking up at 1-3 am at night to watch games and then sleep for 1-2 hrs and run to work. I remember I got so stressed after game 6 in 1998 that had few beers and called in sick that day. In 1999-2000 everybody around me was cheering for Trail Blazers and Sabonis and I bet I was the only person in my country cheering for Jazz. After that I think in 2000 or so we finally were able to follow games on Yahoo's game channel via internet and I spend numerous sleepless nights waking up and following live box score action as live NBA games on TV was such a rare event. Obviously I was super excited when AK was drafted by Jazz as I was following his career since he was 16 years old in Europe and knew that he will be special player. And since moving to Canada in 2004 I probably watched or at least followed live box score action of at least 90% Jazz games.
So that's why I guess.
