Why Can't Gordon Hayward Rebound?

6'9 and he gets 2.5 per game. Per 48 minutes he is getting 4.4 rebounds.

I know our rebounding has actually been our best stats thus far, but it should be. We have 3 6'11 players in our rotation, and 1 guy who led the NCAA 3 years in a row in rebounding. Hayward is really slacking on the boards though. He should be at least around 4 per game for the minutes he is playing. Thoughts?

Gordon Hayward looks like he shies from contact. He does not appear to really commit himself to jumping and fighting for a rebound.

Where do you get this junk?

Gordon Hayward is an excellent rebounder!

Stop with the stats already. Use your eyeballs to judge what a player is doing.

Maybe you didn't get the memo but Favors and Hayward are untouchable. No reason to complain about them. Instead focus on Jefferson, Harris and CJ. Got it?

So now he's 6'9"? Christ almighty. The kid is about 6'7", 6'8" with shoes. Let's all step back from the ledge and at least get our facts straight before jumping. That said, I would like him to rebound a little bit better but perhaps Kanter's addition has swiped some away. Perhaps he's playing a bit more on the perimeter. Perhaps the balls haven't bounced his way just yet. At the end of the day, it's been four games so any threads like this are absolutely stupid. Period.

Not sure I agree about rebounding being our best stat. We are 20th in NBA in reb differential with -1.8 a game. Turnovers and blocks are our best stats so far. ( 2 and 1 in NBA)

Hayward doesn't rebound on the offensive end. Not a huge surprise, nor is it necessary a knock on him. Generally a team philosophy whether wings go for offensive rebounds or not.

His defensive rebound rate is 8.4%. That's what you need to compare to rather than rebounds per. Not as many rebounds to get when you're giving up 50+% on defense.

7th in Defensive Rebound Rate, 16th in Offensive Rebounding Rate, which is good. Reason the differential is in the negative is because opponents have a LOT more defensive rebounding opportunities than the Jazz do.

I am getting different numbers. Jazz rank 21st in defensive rebounds/game and 10th in offensive rebounds/game.
Anyway, to me rebounding differential is the most important rebounding stat. I remember when Suns were running under D'Antoni there were almost at the top in total rebounds but at the end in differential - just because they had more shots and more rebounds available per minute basis due to the style their played. But because they sucked at rebounding they were almost always outrebounded by their opponents. So could you call them good rebounding team based just on total numbers?
Anyway, 4 games is to little sample yet, it could change a lot throughout the season.

Total numbers are a worse state than differential. Rebound rate is the most important stat. A team misses 40 shots and the other misses 30. That's 70 total rebounds available. If the teams rebound at the same defensive rate, say 75%, which is slightly below average, one team will get 37 or 38 rebounds, while the other team would get 32/33 rebounds. That's a five rebound differential for having 10 fewer defensive rebound possibilities. A 49% overall rebound rate is actually very good when you see the Jazz have had 43 fewer defensive rebounding possibilities than their opponents over four games (notwithstanding rebounds off of missed free throws; I assume it doesn't change the total numbers in any major way).

So that fits the pattern. That's ten fewer rebound possibilities per game. If the Jazz were an equal rebounding team as their opponent, they'd have a minus 5 rebound differential. As it stands, they're at minus-1.8, so they're a better rebounding team then their opponents have been.

I have seen many posters on this board say that Hayward is now officially listed as 6'9 by the Jazz. Anways, 6'8 or 6'9 is splitting hairs. I would like to see him be more aggressive as to rebounds.

Would you like him to be "aggressive as to rebounds," or would you rather him close out on the shooter? Or would you rather he be in outlet position for a fast break?

Can I choose all 3? Getting the rebound is a great way to lead a fast break.
