Why can't the Jazz close games?

Is it Ty's substitutions, black hole, failure to defend the 3, lack of confidence, lack of a closer? It seems like there is a pattern that we are in the games at the end, but we fail to get over the hump to take a lead, or blow the lead as we did tonight.

jefferson goes in the post and asks for the ball. jazz waisting time to getting jefefrson the ball instead of having a free flowing offense.

For my money, it's usually a combination of Ty's terrible rotations, coupled with the starting units inability to gets defensive rebounds, and/or stops. Also we lack any kind of perimeter shooting. I actually think it's pretty simple.

Everyone stands around and watches al. In this case some of the dumbest defense you will ever see with Hayward. No closer. No shooters. Ty has no late game strategy...I could go on.

It's Conservatism.

Everything from Ty's substitutions, to Jazz running plays for Al/Sap and watching him, to the Jazz not risking the pass to the cutter. It's the offense that I'm worried about in the 4th quarter. This team needs less one on one play.

Hopefully this Al minutes thing has something to do with a trade.
KOC wanted Favors out of that DWill trade and it's very curious that Favors is only getting 10-12 mins a game.

Jazz made quite a few more fg, had a better shooting percentage, but the other team shot a bunch more ft's and hit a lot of 3's.

Jazz just don't get any respect from refs right now, even Harp and Boler talked about it tonight.
It worried me in the first quarter when the jazz got no calls at all. Even though the jazz were playing way better, I was concerned, because the refs were letting Minny get away with everything and calling every little thing on the jazz.

Oh, and IT IS ALL BIG AL's FAULT!
It's Al's fault that the wings don't play defense.
It's Al's fault that nobody cuts when he has the ball.
It's Al's fault that Hayward is soft and clueless out there.

If you fly a spaceshipt into a blackhole - do you blame the pilot or the blackhole? Everybody knows what Al's strengths and weaknesses are. Ty's insistance on force-feeding him on the block during every critical stretch of the game is mind-boggling. We ran very few post-ups for Al in the 1st-quarter - scored 27 points and Al still was able to score a little as a secondary option - but most importantly the ball was moving, guys were cutting and everyone was involved. Fast-forward to the 4th-quarter: let's dump it down to Al and stand around and watch him.

Once Ty realizes Al isn't his franchise player - both the Jazz and Big Al will be better off.

WOW... Let me sum up what you said:

The other team hit a lot of 3's - This is because the Jazz have never had a defensive philosophy to defend the 3 and it continues to this day. They've let Lowry, Bonner, and Barea light them up for 15+ 3's over the past 3 games.

The other team shot a bunch more ft's - This happens when the other players beat our guys and our bigs are too slow to get over and help, so they end up fouling them because they're not in the correct position

I'll give you the point that Kanter is limited offensively (these things tend to happen to kids who haven't played competitive basketball in 2+ years) but he also has one of the highest rebounding rates in the league. And he's a defensive stopper. He stopped future Hall of Famer Tim Duncan on 2/3 posessions the other nights and let's not forget the 4th quarter where All Star LaMarcus Aldridge only managed to make 1 shot on him and then quit. I'd hardly call that nothing.

The Timberwolves scored on 16 of their final 20 trips down the court. If you don’t get the rebound it is not a stop. The Jazz only got 4 stops in the final 9 minutes of the game. The Jazz forced one turnover and then got three defensive rebounds (Jefferson, Howard and Harris).

Paul Millsap had 0 defensive rebounds in the final 9 mintues, Al Jefferson had 1 in 7 chances.

Millsap and Jefferson couldn’t defend or rebound together last year and nothing has changed.

Offensively in the meltdown, the Jazz shot 4 for 14. Jefferson was 2 for 6 with a turnover. Millsap was 1 for 3 with 3 free throws.

The lineup that closed for the Wolves was Barea, Ridnour. Webster, Williams and Love. That is not a lineup that should out rebound you or prevent you from being able to put points on the board.

In the last set of close games. Millsap and Jefferson played the final 8:29 tonight and were -15, they played the final 8:10 v. SA, they played 5:36 together and were -7 v. Houston, against New Orleans they were benched, in Memphis they only played the final 4:22 and took a 4 point lead to 10 for a +6, against Indiana they played the final 5:00 minutes and were -4 entering the game down 1 and losing by 5.

Since Feb 1st the Jazz have been by far the worst defensive team in the NBA in the 4th quarter. They are allowing 48% shooting earlier this year it was 39% and the next closest to the Jazz 48% is Charlotte at 46%.

The 4 quarter collapses are also happening on offense.

The Jazz’s late-game strategy (which could be roughly summarized with the phrase “Jefferson ISO”) continues to be a major problem. Corbin seems to be susceptible to the collective mental breakdown the players experience down the stretch of close games, because we have yet to see two consecutive, sound offensive sets in the last two minutes of close games. Either Corbin’s drawn-up plays are being ignored by Big Al or the playbook really is as simplistic as it sometimes appears.

Team defense was the difference between the first three quarters and the fourth. When the Jazz were playing aggressive defense and closing out on shooters, it led to turnovers and fast break buckets. Unfortunately, when that team defense sagged off Minny’s shooters and allowed dribble penetration from Barea and Ridnour, the lead quickly dissipated.

Also mentioned was the fact that opposing point guards continue to eat Jazz for lunch.

I can figure that we can't guard point guards, threes and that Big Al should not run ISO plays down the stretch regularly. What I don't get is why are we folding in the 4th quarter.
