This simple animated video made think of a simple thought experiment where there are 10 people in a room.

Which option is safest: 10 people all have guns to protect themselves from 1 another, or NOBODY has a gun?

deep...

As long as we continue to think that gun ownership is a given right, we will have large amounts of gun deaths. If there was some way to convince ourselves that gun ownership should be an earned right (similar to driving a car), we could reduce gun deaths by a huge amount. But it is always difficult to take away benefits, and I cannot see a time when we will require gun safety classes, mental health clearance, licensing, etc. Since we didn't make any changes after Sandy Hook, we won't do so now. We've accepted that children being killed is worth the rights of gun ownership.

OL, what if you're in a situation where everyone in the room may or may not have a gun, then you're all told you can't have them anymore but no one will really know who got rid of theirs or not? And what if there's a big poster on the wall with the rules of the room and rule #2 says everyone has a right to have a gun?

Here's where we're at, there are hundreds of millions of privately owned guns in the U.S.. There is an amendment to our Constitution that says we have the right to own those guns. The Supreme Court has ruled that it is an individual right and that handguns fall under the protection of the 2nd Amendment. The majority of Americans supports 2nd Amendment rights.

So what people talk about is passing "common sense regulations." The above video doesn't fall under what could realistically happen in the U.S.. What is realistic is the banning of cosmetic features, like adjustable stocks, bullpup grips, bayonets (lol), etc. and possibly limiting magazine size. Strengthening background checks should happen, seems like both side could possibly agree to that. But then what? How different is that world than this world?

If we want to really talk about this we need to talk about amending the Constitution. That's the only meaningful way to change things. It's also completely unrealistic.

This thought experiment would be so much better with the 10 people having their option of choosing between one dry ice bomb, 25 bottle rockets, and a toilet paper tube filled with excrement of choice and an M-80.

The reality is US already has put limits on what guns and weapons a private citizen can purchase and own and under what conditions. Once you warrant the government the right to impose ANY regulations and conditions, the question becomes not about whether you put limits on weapon ownership since you've already granted that to the government. The question becomes where you put the limits and what constitutes reasonable exceptions and conditions that don't violate your constitutional rights. IMO, requirement for background checks, mental health examinations and attending firearm safety training/passing exam on firearm safety should not constitute infringement on your rights.

lol!

lefties are only ok with guns, if the government uses it on their behalf to steal!
they are to cowardly to take a gun in their hand and do evil stuff with it, so they vote for a government to do it!
and the liberty loving, law abiding, non violent people are not allowed to have guns!

stop acting like you left wingers hate guns, you are just to scared to wield one yourself

ok what if 6 of the people who are stonger than the remaining 4 vote to start raping, robbing, murdering and torturing each of those 4 left!

then i rather have a gun. or i will be forced to side with the strong 6 and start raping murdering robbing torturing the weaker person to survive the 6 strong ones. but sooner or later when the remaining 3 are dead, they might turn to me

you see this over simplification sucks balls, and only works on stoopid people.

because the line between evil and good runs to each and every single person in the world. so if you are locked up with 10 people in a room, **** might go down!
if you are naive and think people will do no evil without guns, you are mistaken!

throughout history this has happened in society, good but cowardly people turned into commie or national socialist murdering scum!

if every single jew had a machine gun in national socialist germany, and went down shooting. sooner or later the more cowardly nazis would give up! weakening the thiefing socialist scum!

imagine this 4 soldiers turn up at your door. trying to put your family on a train to murdersville! you are gonna die anyway. so you start shooting, you kill 1 soldier, and put 1 in hospital you fail, but he you where gonna die anyway! now 2 soldiers are out of commision, they go to the next family same thing ahppens.

not only are you dwindling the numbers of those soldiers by killing and harming them. the more cowardly national socialist would go into hiding

The best part was the mandatory drug screen and mental health evaluation before being allowed to purchase a gun. That is somewhere we need to go that we might actually have a chance at. Otherwise BP is right.

until government decides that only liberals are mentally healthy.
or for example homosexuality or trans sexuality is a mental disease.

or whatever! their is no settled science on mental health!
