With the 47th Pick, Kevin Murphy

LOL what did you expect? I keep track on my computer while playing games or reading message boards. Simply because I would fall asleep 5 minutes in if I tried to watch it on TV.
Who watches the entire draft, especially when yuor team doesn't have a pick until the 2nd round?
I was like you. I kept track on the computer and had the TV on in the bedroom while I worked on other things. I'd check about every 15 mins out of curiosity to see where players were picked. I didn't expect the Jazz to make a trade, but I'd check Jazzfanz at the same time to see if anything had happened.

i've long since figured out that the way to watch the draft is to have it muted, with 1320 (now 1280) on the radio and at least one laptop open. if something interesting happens, you mute the radio and unmute the TV.

this year my radio was acting funny so i listened to ESPN a little more than i usually do... what a bad year for that. it was the year of the awkward interviews. both the gilchrists were terrible, they literally did a sarcastic "wired" segment where calipari was coaching davis and gilchrist how to hug their moms after their name was called... but the one that took the cake was this interview with jayla robinson.

(paraphrased)
heather cox: how proud are you of your big brother?
jayla: proud.
heather: this is a really exciting night. how fun is it to be here and be a part of this?
jayla: it's exciting.
heather: thomas said he'd be taking you with him wherever he goes. that means you get to move from washington DC to california. what do you think about that?
jayla: it's far.
heather: did you know it's closer to disneyland?
jayla: no.

yeah, don't interview a 9-year-old girl who has never had a camera pointed out her and expect good national TV.

Because we had a concert that night, this was the first year I didn't watch any of the draft in about 30 years and from all accounts, this was the year miss.

Why is Corbin so set on playing the old guys while Murphy is rotting on the bench?? Give Murphy minutes and let him develop!

Just practicing. Gotta stay in shape in the off-season.

Since he was drafted in the 2nd round I doubt we'll have to worry about his playing time.

I'm not sure if any of these got posted or not, mainly because I'm too lazy to look, but here are some little notes on Murphy from the Portsmouth Invitational that I found. Really sounds like a guy who could succeed off the bench in our system.

Perhaps the most impressive individual performer over the course of the PIT, particularly from a long-term perspective, Kevin Murphy's size (he measured 6-6 barefoot) and ability to score in a variety of ways from all over the court stood out all week long. Shooting the ball with range both off the catch and off the dribble, the Tennessee Tech product was consistently able to create separation with his dribble in one-on-one situations, knock down his spot-up jump shots, and utilize his smooth shooting mechanics to convert a number of contested shots in impressive fashion.

Kevin Murphy had a very efficient game. He was 11-14 from the field for 27 points. He also chipped in 6 rebounds. Murphy was the beneficiary of several transition baskets. He possesses a nice mid-range game and is very good 3 pt. shooter, as evidenced by his 43% average during the season. He hit both of his 3 pt attempts and showed a nice high release and good rotation. He can start up and also hit the 3 off the dribble.

Instant offense is something any NBA team will take a gander at and is why Tennessee Tech’s Kevin Murphy will undoubtedly be flown around the country to work out for teams in the upcoming weeks. Going 18-32 from the field for the event for a .563 shooting percentage, the lanky marksman cleared up any concerns over whether his production in the OVC would translate over vs. high-major competition. Murphy worked harder off the ball than any other player in Portsmouth (honorable mention to Kim English) and consistently outworked defenders in the half court in order to get looks.

Perhaps playing second fiddle to Murray State’s Isaiah Canaan in his own conference, the two-time OVC 1st-teamer (who led the league at 20.6 points/game) played with a chip on his shoulder when it mattered most. He proved he’s not a one trick pony by unselfishly dishing out 2.67 assists/gm at the PIT. He also rebounded well for the position, averaging 5 rebounds a night from the guard position (right at his 5.2 avg. as a senior).

Biggest question is how will he perform sporting a Princess backpack. Or will it be a Justin Bieber one?

I feel sorry for the guy. Last couple of seasons the Jazz have had two rookies to haze. This year all that attention will be squarely on ol' Murphy. For the love of Kevin, Mr. O'Connor, please sign one of the undrafted FA's to assist Murphy in the donut and KFC runs.
