What's new

With the Fifth Pick... Dante Exum

18 4 and 4 on 44% FGs and 33% 3pt. Those guys you mentioned dominated HS. 30+ ppg and double figure rebound type guys.

Sure, Exum might be a great player, but I'm not seeing much indication of why we should have high hopes. Not a great athlete, not a shooter, not a pure point, not a great rebounder for a guard, not a great scorer, doesn't have great size (unless he's a full time PG) - all this judging him against HS competition. Great players have elite skills and/or athleticism and they dominate HS.

The only thing that stands out about him is his size as a PG. I have to think the Jazz see all the big PGs in the league and feel inadequate with the smallish Burke.

You don't think his speed stands out? Can you see that long first step? He'll get by people. I see a high-character kid, too. He was the only guy left on the board with the potential to be a first option, which is what we need.

I wonder what the non-tankers are thinking now? Were those 3 or 4 extra wins worthwhile, now that we could not get into the top 3 and likely get a franchise player? What did those extra wins get us?

Got us Exum instead of Smart.

I'm more than fine with that, tbh.

IMO, if you're picking a raw young player and want to really swing for the fences, Zach Lavine is a better option because he is an elite athlete and a better shooter than Exum at this point.

LaVine couldn't even stay on the floor in Pac play. He was a ghost in the tournament. He's further away than exum. Quote me.

Perhaps his speed. Good point.

Nothing else stands out? Being the fastest guy in the entire draft class (per combine, if I remember correctly) doesn't stand out?

PKM has the connections to scouts and say he has the speed of John Wall and the fluidity of Steph Curry.

speed of john wall and fluidity of curry?? holy **** this guy will be amazing cant wait for the summer league

If nothing else, this pick rekindled the dying ember that was my caring about the NBA. The only pick the Jazz have ever made that made me more excited was when they drafted Karl Malone.

I've never seen the kid play a second of basketball, outside of highlights on youtube and draft shows but when I read the things about him from established NBA "experts", it was hard to not be intrigued. When the Jazz got the 5th pick and I had heard all the stories about there being four possible franchise players, that almost doused the ember. Sorry but I just couldn't work up the excitement for Aaron Gordon, Noah Vonleh, Julius Randle, etc. but when I saw on Twitter that Orlando was taking Gordon, that turned the disappointment into sincere jubilation.

I am actually excited for the season to begin. I know the team will suck again, but I hope that with a new coach in place and an exciting rookie, that by the end of the season they will be a decent team.

welcome back from the 40 days and 40 nights.

Rip Van YB, waking up from his long sleep.
Damn Jazz have now made it IMPOSSIBLE for me not to renew my League Pass subscription. Which means more hours in front of the TV, with the disapproving wife complaining about me not spending more time with her or at least more time on housework. I'm gonna blame DL when those divorce proceedings begin.

This. Vonleh, Gordon, or Randle would have been a huge buzzkill. Woj tweeting that ORL was taking Gordon at #4 made my night.

You say jubilation. I just let my dancing throughout the house do the talking for me.

Maybe you and I should just plan a play date for our wives.

I let out a shriek. Luckily I was the only person in the house when I saw that.

Haha, I gotta admit I got such a rush of adrenaline when Gordon went 4th, I knew Exum was the pick after that. by the time the selection was made I was on my feet and let out a primordial roar.

Also before the 23rd pick i was chanting rodney hood at the tv (i was pretty buzzed).

Im a huge football fan and follow the draft pretty thoroughly (not like Basketball though) when Adrian Peterson fell to my Vikings at 5, honestly i was jumping up and down and clapping, screaming like a madman, I think my reaction last night was almost on par with that.

How mad are all of Exum's sponorships that he went to Utah? Dude was probably the most marketable personality in the draft and he went to Utah. Footlocker so mad.
