With the Fifth Pick... Dante Exum

Exum right now from the vids makes me think of Barbosa. My hope is that he can become better than that down the road but it's not a bad starting point by any means either.

Hoping he pans out for us.

Good comparison - tall, long, lightning quick guards who play mostly below the rim. In Barbosa's 4th season he averaged 18 ppg on 48% and 43% 3pt. That's pretty damn good, but he couldn't keep it up.

Was there a "sure thing" in the top 5?

No

Agree to disagree.

Wiggins is a sure thing. Is he going to be LeBron like he was hyped to be? No, but he is a sure thing as a starter and impact player, IMO.

you're probably right. But, he was either totally unavailable anyways, or would have come at a steeeep cost. I don't think he was ever available.

I watched every game of him in Prague LIVE, I rewatched the video. I even elaborated in this thread, what I find special about Exum.

Well there you go tell me more.

If he was awesome in Prague that vid did not show it. No way he even approached 30% fg in that vid. There were some decent passes that would have been assists if his team mates could finish, but it's hard to blame them for something he did poorly as well. There was nothing in that vid that made Exum look particularly special. I want to like his game I really do, but I've yet to see anything worthy of a top pick. So far it's been 100% hype and I'm not ready to sign on til I see it.

If you know of a better vid please post it.

I have never searched for these on youpoop. But you can see some sick crossovers in this video. And if you don't think his shake isn't Rose-ish off the dribble, I don't know.

Edit:
Also he's already really good at absorbing contact with his rail thin body. He adds strength and that will get even better. Also you can see instances where he's creative to avoid contact and finish.

His feel for shooting is better than his mechanics. Since then he's worked a ton to improve that and we'll witness that mid July.
I think his shooting will be above average once he getts repetitions in.
Does mechanical flaws and some shots fall in, others barely rattle out.

Free Throw% was low for everyone during the tourney. I think it's normal when you avg 36 min like Exum and play every 24hours for 2 full weeks.
He also had moves to get his pull up in the air mostly uncontested. And with his length and quickness advantage that will translate.

He missed very few open guys and sometimes was able to keep dribbles alive when he saw help in position or scanned the court for an open guy.

I watched the Hoop Summit and his game against Spain and I can definitely see why he went top 5. Against Spain he was getting tripled team and still broke guys down. He does have a quick step and blew by the Harrison twins twice. His outside shot looked fine to me. The biggest thing he has to work on his sometimes he got into the wrong position (caught in the air) leading to a turnover.

I am more excited about the kid after seeing some video.

BTP, what are your expectations for him in summer league? Points, assists, FG% and 3pt%?

David Locke twetted out...

Trey Burke told @ESPNAndyKatz before draft Jazz needed "a true center and another guard" Specifically mentioned Exum according to Katz.

I hope Hayward and Favors doesn't read this.:)

Lol, why? Favors himself thinks he is a PF and Kanter plays PF.

What I really want to see is his defense. If he can defend I will be happy. I feel like he's going to score inside off the dribble. But it's all about defense for me. I know his defensive rating is pretty good but I look forward to seeing what he can do against NBA players. The fact he's big, intelligent and fast is good but we shall see.

It will be interesting to see how Exum and Hood play with Burke. No idea if Hood will start (depends on many things - some outside his control such as the other SFs) but Exum and Hood definitely have some useful tools.

Crickey, did you hear Dante has a sister, a twin sister just like Hayward and Luke Skywalker.

Dante asked for #7 on his uniform, but the Jazz told him, "not on your Nellie!" So he is going to wear #11.

Well Favors has said in the past that he considered himself a PF, but much more recently the Jazz said they definitely consider him a C.
I suspect things have changed after last year. I am sure he knows what the Jazz brass have said.

Before I make these kind of predictions I want to see their summer league roster, as I'm fairly familiar with the skillset of many players in European leagues.

But if I assume an average summer league roster, I'd say:

Per 36 Minutes:

17Pts, 6 Assists, 4 Reb, 2 Steal, 28% 3pt%, 45% FG%, 70% FT%

So I'll modify that once rosters are leaked.

Why?

So then they can play half *** and pat themselves on the back for their "good effort good job!"?

I hope they not only heard this but plastered it all over their bedrooms. Maybe it will finally light a fire under their asses? I'd love to see Favors actually get emotional and play with some nasty. I'd love for Hayward to actually attack the rim and develop a post game.

I hope more talented but underachieving players are called out.

Hopefully someone calls out Trey's chucking and lack of defense. I'd love to hear people challenge burks to become a good team player. I'd love to see kanter called out for his turnovers, focus, and defense.

Folks, we have talent. But for years we've allowed them to underachieve, play with poor effort, and accept losing. "It's just one game" was the previous motto. How embarrassing!

The standards need to be raised. First thing Quin needs to do is lay down the law. Play without effort or defense? Sit your butt on the bench.
