World Cup Thread

Ravin all I have to say is I love basketball- but soccer is the biggests sport in the world. World Cup is the biggest sporting event in the world too.

Relating to cost, my friend is going to SA. His total cost is right around $13,000, which is pretty cheap comparatively. Travel agents are selling discount packages starting at $20k.

Yeah, South Africa was an interesting choice by the committee. But WC gets most of its revenue (at least 90% of the 3.5 billion or so) from TV, sponsorships, and merchandise. So I think they'll do just fine from a financial perspective.

Who called you names, Arch? I didn't. I don't remember anyone calling names.

Don't march in here and to tell us why soccer sucks, then pretend like you were victimized or that you were merely trying to generate a genuine dialogue about World Cup attendance.

Oh, and regarding my spelling mistake: You win. Go get yourself a cookie.

Did you read the thread by chance? When did I say that soccer sucks? I'm saying the world cup is a joke, at least this years. Again, why did the committee choose such a terrible host country? There's not even one single game sold out for it!

I'm not a soccer fan at all, but even I will stop and watch this "joke". And then I'll realize what I'm doing and find something else.

Since I don't follow soccer, I am wondering if one of you fans can help me out. When did Flea start playing soccer?

Let me ask you guys a question. Would you think that the NFL was a joke if they selected a country to host the Super Bowl where it was either a) too expensive to fly to b) too far away c) too dangerous to go to and d) didn't sell out because of that? It wouldn't make football a joke, but I'm sure it would make the NFL a joke.

It's still not the same. The Super Bowl is one game. This is numerous games, and much of it where the participants are unknown. The host country is a horrible choice, but I'm sure there was political pressure to throw Africa a bone. To judge the World Cup simply on attendance is ridiculous. I am The Ugly American, and I understand the magnitude of the World Cup.

See, what are you talking about? The Super Bowl is one game and it's in a league thats only played in one country where it's the most watched. So the host country for the World Cup is too far away from where? Too expensive to fly from where? This is a world event. People will fly from all over the world just not America(**** YEAH!), which seems like the only perspective you were thinking from. What are your thoughts on the Olympics in China. Were they a joke due to cost of flying (from where?) and too far away (from where?)? Like YB said, much of the participants are unknown and people will go to all the games(whatever countries are playing) available.

Yeah, I know it's just one game compared to many that the world cup has. I'm just saying it's a terrible choice for a host. I'm not the brightest person in the world, but I'm pretty sure South Africa isn't surrounded by the richest countries in the world, it's at a terrible location. Do you argue that it's not? Do you really think that not having a single game sold out has anything to do with that fact? It's a fact that it's too far away from people who can actually afford to go to the games. I'm not thinking about just an American perspective, but Americans have the second biggest number of ticket sales.

The United States accounts for the second biggest number of ticket sales, with England taking the third largest contingent to South Africa.

SK has a pretty light group, Just have to take out Greece and Nigeria baby. GO RED DEVILS!!!!!

and GO USA!!!

Americans accounting for most of the ticket sales is most likely due to the fact that every country and their dog has people living in America most of whom have the means to actually get to a world cup.

So do you think that South Africa was a good choice for the World Cup games? Yes or no?

Sure.

I don't assess the quality or validity of events based on number of participants. If that were my only criteria, I would be forced to concede that every single World Cup should be held in New York or London.

The greatest growth in the game of soccer (participation, financially, success) is in Africa right now. Having the WC there will legitimize that and grow it even further. Many of the people who will attend the games in person would never have had the opportunity otherwise.

And at the end of the day, the people who perhaps would have been able to attend had it been held in say, Europe, but who cannot because of its current location represent about 0.02% of the total "watching population" of this event. So not only is your argument stupid, it's statistically insignificant.

By your metric of determining a "joke", the following make the list:
The Utah Jazz, having failed to sell out a majority of their games. Also, 25 other NBA teams.
The NCAA tournament, having failed to sell out a majority of their games.
Every World Cup
The Olympics, none of which have ever sold out their events.

The only successes in your mind:
The Super Bowl, consistently sold out.
LDS General Conference
Blink-182, selling out for over a decade.

Source?

Or that the World Cup committee selected one of the worst, and most dangerous places to host the event.

Has absolutely nothing to do with what I'm talking about.

Do you ever go to the Legacy Center?
