Wow

This is based on idle speculation, not some reputable source. In other words, the guy who wrote this is talking out of his ***.

How is it not a wow?

Because it's not based on anything.

Many people on this very website have called for the Jazz to take advantage of his expiring contract by trading him before the deadline.

What contending team are we going to trade him to?

It as if Dime magazine is saying, well Utah sucks, so they may as well try to dump salary to get under the tax threshold. I disagree with Dime's premise that Utah is "always looking to cut salary." If that were the case, the Millsap offer would not have been matched, or the Jazz would have agreed to that Dallas idea that had Boozer going to the Mavs for garbage - and getting Utah within a minor move of landing underneath the tax threshold. Yes, Harpring was unloaded and it also cost Maynor. A #19 pick to save, what, around $10M in salary and taxes? Hard to turn down that kind of deal. And Brewer was traded for next to nothing. I didn't agree with that move, but knowing now that KOC was in discussions to obtain Jefferson...well, it makes a ton more sense. O'Connor was trying to obtain additional assets he could give to Minnesota.

IF AK is traded, I think he goes to a NON-CONTENDER looking to dump a veteran starter. Ideally, KOC would find a very good starter making, say $10M, and then the balance in equal expirings or contracts that could be bought out. That likely gets the Jazz UNDER the tax threshold for next season without weakening the team.

The statement is illogical. It assumes we can't be a contender, for a start. Second, it bases that assumption on the fact that AK47 is part of our team. Third, it then states that a contender would want AK. So he stops us being a contender, but makes a contender a better team? Lastly, it invokes an impossible scenario, a contender with cap space. You can't be a contender without spending big.

Plus, IMHO, nobody will be trying to clear cap space for next summer's free agent crop they way they did for LBJ and company this summer. The fact a player has an expiring contract is nowhere near as important as it was last season when it comes to trades.

always looking to cut salaries.....

That is why they have been willing to pay the luxury tax the past two years. I don't think so, in fact it shows the Jazz are always looking to pay extra for a championship contending team.

Hey, you never know. Maybe we can trade AK to the Heat for DWade. Or to the Lakers for Gasol.

Agree, though. What contender will have space? The only scenario (for Utah dumping payroll) is to use the 110% rule that would have the Jazz taking back just $15.6M to make the trade legal and to also be able to buy out a few more of the traded contracts. Then the Jazz could save a pretty good chunk of money THIS year.

But I still think the only deal that KOC MIGHT make is one that brings Utah a starter. If the Jazz want to keep Deron, the team has to get BETTER in a deal, not WORSE.

I agree, and thats why I said wow.

I didn't realize taking on Al Jefferson's contract was considered cutting salary...

I agree, and thats why I said wow.

.. nah still disagree that this deserves a 'wow'

Utah is not "always looking to cut salary" but has made moves last year that were purely to relieve financial pressures - why else would it make head scratching moves such as moving Maynor and bring in Gaines? Every team at some point make moves that saves money and future financial flexibility - nothing new there.

So what? 'Wow' that the Jazz may be one of the teams doing what every other teams also do at one point or another?

Nah-ah.
