...Skokie Police Cmdr. David Pawlak said the 17-year-old has been implicated by the other suspects. "Currently, the Skokie Police Department is looking for no one else," he said.

The five plotted to rob the girl after arranging to buy marijuana from her, according to prosecutors. Gadau was with her to provide "moral support for his friend" when she resisted and gunfire erupted, Pawlak said.

Gadau died from a wound to the back and the girl was shot in the face and remains in the hospital on a respirator, though Pawlak said she is "getting better everyday."

Two of those charged, Dzevad Avdic and Jeremy Ly, were friends of Gadau, 17. Ly, Avdic, along with Myles Hughes and Nicholas Smith, are being held without bond. All of them are 19....

...Patricia Gadau said Avdic and Ly had been to the family’s house and were friends of her son.

“I feel betrayed,” Gadau said. “It’s sad because I know their parents raised them here in Skokie to protect them from what we’ve been exposed to.”

The chain of events that led to Gadau’s slaying started with Avdic planning a robbery and asking Ly who might be a good target, Assistant State’s Attorney David Mullner said. Ly gave Avdic the name and number of the girl, "indicating that if Avdic had a gun, she would give it up easily," Mullner said.

On Sept. 24, Avdic contacted the girl and arranged to meet her to buy marijuana.

On Sept. 28, Avdic arranged to meet the girl, and he drove Hughes, Smith and the fifth man to the place where they were to meet. Smith later told detectives he was aware of a "snatch and run" plan before he went along with the others.

Avdic called the girl twice, with the call pinging -- showing a location for Avdic’s phone -- off a cellphone tower two blocks from the girl’s home, Mullner said.

When they met in the 9200 block of Kedvale, the girl got into the driver’s seat of her car, with Gadau in the front passenger seat. Hughes was in the rear passenger-side seat, and the 17-year-old arrested Monday in the rear driver-side seat.

The 17-year-old took out a handgun and demanded marijuana from the girl, who refused, Mullner said. The teen, who has yet to be charged, then shot Gadau in the back and the girl in the face...

Legalize marijuana and this isn't even a plan anymore.

But as has been discussed, people with a predilection to hurt people will find a way to hurt people.

It is sad.

Legalizing weed will stop robberies? Nah. I don't think so (I do think weed should be legal though.)

But then again, I'm told that white people have never experienced once ounce of racism towards them. Ever!.

Interesting how the 19-yr olds know how to "game" the system. They had the unnamed 17-yr old do the shooting.

Won't happen, but this is where the death penalty should kick in. If you take a gun to a crime and use it, there is an intent to kill. And certainly premeditation in terms of being willing to use that gun in committing the crime. Sorry, I know I'm heartless, but these five murderers should be permanently removed from society. And it has nothing to do with marijuana legalization. They were out to commit a robbery, likely figuring a female dealer would have plenty of cash in her possession and be an easy target due to her gender.

what really caught my eye was the range of colors and ethnicities the perpetrators appear to represent

too bad that this little "Model U.N." assemblage of young people couldn't have come up with a more constructive project

and yes, marijuana should be legalized - - though I'm not sure that would make much of a difference with youth crime since I'm sure there would be age restrictions.

though then again, there are age restrictions on booze and cigarettes and I'm not sure we see these types of crimes for a pack of cigarettes or a six pack or beer - - but maybe we do?

"The chain of events that led to Gadau’s slaying started with Avdic planning a robbery and asking Ly who might be a good target." So i don't think the crime was originally about obtaining drugs. The drugs were the target after the victim was identified. Perhaps had they robbed someone else, that money would have then been flipped into obtaining drugs.

Age restrictions won't resolve this. Neither will legalizing marijuana. The perpetrators lacked money. They planned a robbery. The target was chosen as someone viewed as weak enough to not offer resistance.

Yeah, I sort of misread the robbery completely. I thought they targeted her as someone who would "buy" marijuana from them but what they really planned was to rob her of the cash she brought to make the purchase.

Some new info has come to light about the victim. Link.

Thanks, Log. I was a little down reading about the unfortunate death of a teenaged kid but you cheered everything up by making light of his existence by inferring he looks like Rick Astley (which he doesn't) or Rick Rolling a thread with content that's serious and unfortunate in nature (which is tasteless).
