You're the GM this offseason. What do you do?

A few things are pretty clear to me:

1. The Jazz really like Favors
2. The Jazz aren't going to overpay for free agents this year
3. The Jazz will only let go of Favors if
a. A trade comes through that makes sense
b. good players (potentially like Thad or Mirotic) get squeezed by the market and you can pick up two of them in the space you get from waiving Favors

They arent going to be early players in free agency. They are going to sit on their hands (other than in trade talks) and wait for **** to settle and pick up the scraps. That's just the play this year unless DL can make some trade.

Or you have a meeting find out what he’s looking for and talk it through... I’m sure a twitter post will put the vibes out... maybe in a month or so things might heat up then you strike.
 
Like, if you had 5 potential romantic interest options, would you go on a date with your 4th option and tell her/him "Well if I don't get a yes from the 3 ahead of you we can go out again". Nah. You just flirt a bit and get the feelers out. That's why the Jazz let these tweets leak (potentially, or this could be Thad's people leaking to build a market).

This is what NBA Free Agents want: Money and to feel wanted.

If you arent coming to a meeting with those things, don't have a damn meeting.
 
Washington is already at the luxury line. I think the play should be Portis + BPA + quality with the room MLE.

$11 or $12 should get Portis and it could be an amazing long term fit. He could be our Favors with a 3 point shot. A PF/C who has room to grow.

We have around $6 million left which could get a really good player depending on how things shake out.

Portis the complete opposite of Favors.

We are talking about a 6'11 player who shot the same percentage on 2pt shots that Ricky Rubio did this year. If that doesnt blow your mind I dont know what will.

He's 24 and just shot over 40% from 3 last year. He's been playing for unorganized, tanking franchises so far. Favors had to evolve to get to this point where he is respected so much for his comprehensive defense. I have faith in our coaching staff to get Portis' defense up to snuff. Offensively, he is already more dynamic than Favors.

If we can get Portis + a guy like DeMarre Carroll, we are better than just having Favors. This season and long term.

You set up a date and cancel if you like girl 1-3 better and end up closing the deal.

I mean it ain’t like he isn’t talking to other teams.
 
Let’s get one thing straight. Favors individually might be better than a Mirotic or Portis, but both those guys make the jazz better and bigger bang for their buck. Don’t get me wrong I’m a Favors Apologist but he he’s not a 4 in the modern nba era, and doesn’t fit next to Gobert. He will also hinder both The ability of Mitchell and Conley to find open shots inside, and last we are paying a mostly backup center 18 million. Lol

Just my two cents.

Ah, yes, I think that's the point which has been hammered home a hundred times here over the last two years.
 
I will be shocked if we don't keep Favors at this point. This front office just doesn't have it in them to cut the cord.

I’m imagining the FO is sitting around like a couple trying to decide what to eat for dinner, neither being very committal, but both wanting the other to suggest what it is that they’re secretly wanting. Or, everyone else wants to move forward, but DL is the one who’s really wanting his favorite restaurant, and they’ve already eaten there three times this week. He pretends like he’s interested in something new, but he keeps shooting down everyone’s suggestions, hoping that eventually someone will get a craving for his favorite place.

The obsession with a 4 shooting threes is pretty dumb too. Its not a must. There are other ways to win.

You only get rid of Favors if it brings in someone significantly better. No one mentioned makes us that much better. What we gain with Tobias we also take a different kind of step back by letting Favors go.

Favors looked his absolute best last year and could get better.

Exum is the real problem with the roster. Fix that mess.
 
I think that if we could somehow get Jabari and keep Favors that is a whole lot better than bringing in Tobias on some outrages contract and losing Favors.

Jabari+Favors > Tobias 100% if the money is the same. That is an easy decision.

Neither Crowder nor 36 year old Joe Johnson were better players than Favors yet lineup data shows that we were better with them at the 4 than Favors. We don't need to replace Favors with someone who is significantly better than he is, we need to replace him with someone who is a significantly better fit at the 4 next to Gobert than he is.
