What's new

You're the GM this offseason. What do you do?

Also, all this supposed theorizing by the FO to maneuver things in such a way to keep Favors under all scenarios makes me feel like they're playing fantasy basketball.

Or maybe they know more than you do. We don't know what goes on behind the scenes. Maybe there are whispers that Gobert doesn't plan to stay. Or other things that the arm chair GMs just don't understand.

I would find the idea of retaining Favors to be plan B if Gobert left two years from now to be an odd thing to be focusing on at this stage in the game. Maybe, but if their omniscience is above question, we may as well shut this forum down. I just wish I knew what they knew about Tony Bradley and Dante Exum.

I think we are getting Dlo, keeping favors, and making one more trade. Plus using our tpe.

Why would Russell want to go to Phoenix over here?

They know that both Bradley and Exum suck and we're wasted draft picks

#LockeWatch: "The more I talk to people around the league, the more I think about things I'm guessing a large portion of what the Jazz do this off-season is going to be done PRIOR to July 1st"

-Jazz want talent upgrade - significant interest in doing it at PG
-less of an interest of doing it at PF if you can keep Favors.
-slight upgrade at PF? if you keep Favors (i.e. what Locke did in the mock draft - TRADE THE FIRST ROUNDER for player who cannot stay on the floor in the playoffs!!!!)
-Kemba is probably not possible - he's not leaving supermax to come to Utah, also has options for NY and LA...
-Jimmy Butler - probably not interested in
-Middleton - not likely - MKE probably going to pay him
-Harris - if Butler leaves PHI, Harris is going to stay, but if he leaves, there are lots of of other options for him
-he seems to think the Jazz don't have much of a chance with the FAs above
-the only options left - Russell and Conley
-He's heard Russell and PHX are tied together and likely destination for DLo
-if you can, why not just do Conley deal now then? That's the safe route. if you can do it without losing Favors, is it even more appealing?

So in essence - Locke is selling the security of getting Conley and not risking being left empty-handed. I hate this mode of thinking so ****ing much. It's the exact frame of mind that has us in the position we are - keep picking the safest route with the highest floor and keep avoiding taking chances just so you don't end up in the worst case scenario.

It makes sense. It's really the Jazz's only play to get a near All Star-caliber player. The alternative would be to move Donovan to the 1. I guess the FO isn't keen to do that.

Utah can't keep Favors and sign D'Lo unless we swing a S&T or move other pieces.

Al Horford is declining $30+ million so he can re-negotiate a longer deal with Boston with more guaranteed money. I don't understand why we couldn't do the same with Favors. I simply do not see a team out there willing to give Favors $12-15 on a long term deal. I don't think it exists.

If we gave Favors 3 years $36 million, I think he takes it. If we had him at $12 or $13 instead of $18, that helps our summer initiatives.

Big Al had a PO, Favors has a TO. If Utah doesn't pick up his TO, that is tantamount to waiving him in the CBA I believe.

We could still re-sign him after waiving him. The premise is the same.

Horford is gonna stay in Boston. He didn't decline his option before talking to the Boston FO. This is like an NFL player renegotiating his deal so his team has more money to spend.

If a player is waived, he cannot be resigned by original team for one year.

I'm pretty sure.... if we "cut" him, we lose his Bird Rights so we would have to use cap space to re-sign him. We can still re-sign him though.

I would bet he gets picked up off the waiver wire by Lakers or someone else though. But it still might be worth the risk. There are other options. He's just a good fit.. Plus the team likes him and he likes the team.

The Lakers aren't going to spend $18 million of their $23-27 million in cap space on a bench PF/C.

There are other teams who might do it, but I just don't know who they are if they do exist at all.

Why would Russell want to go to Phoenix over here?

Because they’re young and talented with Booker, Ayton, and to a lesser extent, Jackson, Bridges, Oubre, Melton and Okopo.
