Grantland: Capturing the Noncontenders’ State of Mind - Utah Jazz

It seems Simmons is a believer. Also, he shares Lowe's same thoughts about trading our pick and Hood to upgrade at point guard (no surprise there). BTW, there is a Truehoop video on Gobert that I couldn't paste.

One of my favorite Dom quotes goes to my favorite NBA renaissance: In less than 12 months, the Jazz found a real coach (Quin Snyder), stumbled into a 22-year-old shot-blocker/rebounder (the Stifle Tower), watched Gordon Hayward and Derrick Favors blossom into legit pieces, created a genuine wrestling heel for their fans (Enes Kanter, Utah’s no. 1 enemy for the next 10 years)4 and struck oil with the best 18-year-old in the history of the NBA draft (Dante Exum). Fine, I made up the Exum part. But everything else happened. This summer, the Jazz need to either (a) sign an impact point guard, or (b) turn their top-12 pick, Burke, Hood and/or one of their future first-rounders from G-State and OKC into an impact point guard like Lawson (as described above). Whatever it takes. And yes, these guys would have stolen 2015’s hypothetical Entertaining As Hell Tournament and grabbed one of the no. 8 seeds.

I think anybody throwing Hood's name out there as a throw in piece in a trade loses a lot of credibility. If we are trading our pick and Hood we better be getting Curry, Westbrooke, Parker or Paul back.

Some Kanter gold:

Put it this way: He’s already earned the derisive Internet nickname “Penis Cancer” from Jazz fans. Now THAT is a wrestling heel. Next time he plays in Utah, he needs to bring Paul Heyman with him.

Like the others have said, Hood ain't goin nowhere. I'm into letting the cake bake with maybe one guy added (3&D, and/or floor-spacing big, but a point guard could easily be argued but I believe in Exum and don't think he should get demoted as in his case, I think a demotion might stunt him).

But I like good press. It's fun.

If Hood leaves, then an All-Star better be walking in.

I'm doubling down on Exum: he's gonna be noticeably better on the first day of next season. We need help at PG, but if it means spending all our bullets to get it done, then no thanks. Sign Corey Joseph OR realize that Alec Burks is your first guard off the bench and that you can play Burks-Hood-Hayward at the same time without any problem whatsoever (something Q certainly realizes) and then make Trey Burke your 7th man (a distinction that Patty Mills has created: "best 7th man"). Hell, if the latter option works, then just start Burks alongside Hood and Hay.

If we're going to ******* this offseason, then I hope it's to bring DeMarre back and get Tomic here.

There’s a really fun Ty Lawson summer deal coming. Maybe a three-way that sends Lawson and a second-rounder to Utah, Jrue Holiday and Utah’s 2015 lottery pick to Denver, and Rodney Hood and Trey Burke to New Orleans?

I don't know why they keep thinking that Lawson is a viable option here. He had said in the past that he hates Utah

There have been several trade ideas on this board who just want to throw Rodney into trades. I can't believe people want to get rid of him like he is some throw-in. I think Rodney can be one of our best players in a few years. Personally, I don't see any need to trade away of our core guys for a few years, this team is still a few years away from be top contenders. Next year the Jazz could make the playoffs and the following year they need to win the division and get a good seed before we tweak the roster.

This team has been playing together in reality for a short time. THis is the first year the coaching staff has had to work with this group. Alec burks has been injured almost all year. We have a hungry group of guys who want to get better and seem to enjoy playing with each other. There is no need to jump steps and make a dumb move. Trading Hood would be a STUPID move especially now. Jazz need to hit another home run in the draft and shore up the bench with another big and and get a shooter.

Patience is needed. Just think in 2 years Dirk-Mavs, Tim Duncan -the Spurs, and Warriors are going to be declining. Jazz can already compete with the Houston, Portland, and the Memphis of the world. Jazz need players like Hood who can make plays and shoot. Guys who I would not trade right now, Favors, Exum, Hood,
Gobert and Hayward. I would consider trading Alec if his style doesn't fit our new style. However, I rather keep him if he comes back better than ever. I would trade Burke. The rest are just supporting character guys.

I don`t see us trading Hood. We need playmaking and shooting badly and he seems to be the real deal. I don't mind packaging our multiple first rounders and Burke for a veteran.

To echo the Hood comments, his stock couldn't be higher right now and that means he is in no way a throw in to any deal.

He's one of our VERY few players that can create his own shot and take the focus off Hayward. And that's not just from distance as he has a very advanced mid-range game for his experience level. He's also a committed defender.

You dont "toss" those guys into deal, especially on rookie deals going into this new era of mega cap.

I'm fairly certain he would punch that ticket out of Denver to Utah faster than a Gobert rebound jam at this point. . .

Difficult to be certain after he said that Utah its the only team in the NBA he wouldn't play for. Nuggets are also playing a bit better since the Shaw's experiment. More importantly, does the FO in Utah see him as a good fit? They might want to wait on Exum's development. Burke on the other hand could find him himself in trade talks if he doesn't improve during the offseason.

I don't blame these guys for thinking Hood is a throw in chip. No one has seen us play this year. No one has watched us play the last couple of weeks. They won't be using Hood as a "throw in player" next April.

I don't think Utah trades for a starting PG. Unless it is a current All-Star PG. They are all in with Exum.

I really like it but am very against training hood. If we do he creates a big gap that in turn needs to be filled.

We have enough other stuff to trade.

Dude made an offhand quip about Utah on Reddit. It was hardly a manifesto. Additionally we were right in the middle of Corbin stagnation Hell at the moment with Denver regularly rolling over us. It would be like asking a Jazz player if they would play in Sacramento right now. Every one of them would say Hell no, and it would have little to do with the city. But yeah, although starting Lawson would almost assuredly punch a ticket into the playoffs, We probably have more long term potential with Exum. Still, I wouldn't cry if we could turn "assets" into Lawson.
