This is actually becoming quite complicated. It is so much more than just airstrikes in Syria.

Russia is being joined by Iran, Hezbollah and China in Syria.

Papers in India and Israel are reporting that Chinese military "advisers and trainers" are aboard Chinese vessels on their way to Syria.

But then let's look at Iraq:

Russia, Syria, Iran and Iraq have set up a "military coordination cell" in Baghdad.

Now on to Yemen:

Russia and Iran are demanding an immediate halt to the Saudi lead coalition in Yemen. According to Russia's news agencies that is.

As for American allies: Israel, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Qatar, Jordan, Turkey and the struggling Yemen gov. Basically the Sunnis are siding with us and the Shias with Russia.

Also Alt, if the Saudis are our only friends then that brings half the middle east with them. While Iran has been busy so has Saudi Arabia.

Aside from the US the members of the Saudi Coalition in and around Yemen are: Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Sudan, Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, Pakistan and Somalia.

Now if this blows up and becomes a wider war than I expect some defections from that group. Most likely candidates are Pakistan, Sudan and Somalia.


My question is this: At what point does the rhetoric become that we are already involved in a cold world war. There are two theaters already:

Middle East and the South/East China Sea

The countries with military forces in those areas are: America, Britain, France, Australia, Turkey, Belgium, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Kuwait, UAE, Qatar, Philippines, Japan, Vietnam, India, Morocco, Sudan, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Jordan, Russia, China, Iran, Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, Cambodia

If this thing goes hot I expect to see at least Pakistan and Afghanistan switch sides. That also ignores the militant groups on both sides like the Free Syrian Army, Houthis and Hamas that only complicate things.

Obama needs to get on the Phone with Erdogan(Turkey) and convince him to declare Syria and Iraq as failed states and support an independent Kurdistan carved out of Iraq and Syria. I think Turkey would support an Independent Kurdistan based in Erbil that had pledged to respect Turkey's border. Iran, with millions of Kurds of their own (and Baluchi's), would be forced to come to the table. Iran won't choose Assad over their own security considerations. We could directly arm the Kurds with real weapons and have a legitimate military force that we could trust in Syria and Iraq. One that would expand the influence of Nato. We would have a stable ally for years to come. We aren't going to find that in Tehran, Baghdad, or Damascus.

Putin is left trying to prop up 2 failed states all by his lonesome with very little to gain. He will throw Assad under the bus.

There are actually two main Kurdish parties and one has extremely negative relations with the Turkish gov. The PKK is based mostly in Turkey and the gov would need a lot of pushing and carrots to allow them a state. At least from what I have read.

But Turkey is already allowing American warplanes to fly out from their airbases bordering Syria. Turkey has a lot of military forces along that border as well (tanks, APCs, troops, artillery...)

But in the vein of your comment Erdogan came out today and said that Turkey will not allow failed states to exist along their border. It was a shot across Russia's bow.

Also Russia just said that if Iraq asks than Russia will expand airstrikes to Iraqi airspace as well.

Turkey will not allow us to support Kurdish forces in Syria from that base. They are fine with us supporting the Iraqi Kurds though.

There are actually more than 2. The PUK(east Iraq), KDP,(North Iraq), YPG(Syria), PKK(Turkey). Turkey can through its policies decide who is in the drivers seat. Turkey has good(but tentative) relations with the KDP that is the main power in the Iraqi Kurdistan regional government. Kurdish oil from Iraq(40% of Iragi reserves) is already flowing through Turkey. Kurdish oil in Syria would need to also flow through Turkey. That's big for Turkey. Further Turkey can quell some of the Turkish Kurds discontent and discredit the PKK by supporting Kurdistan. The most nationalist young Kurds from Turkey are likely to immigrate and fight for a national homeland in Iraq and Syria. Finally, Turkey gets a buffer between itself and Shiite nations and expands its influence southward.

With Iraq and Syria showing that they cannot climb into Iran and Russia's beds fast enough I think pushing for a Kurdish state with Turkeys backing would create just one more ally in that region.

Kurds, from what I have read, tend to have a more favorable view of the US than the average Arab population.

The idea is at least worth investigating imo.

Looks like an Iranian, Syrian (gov.) and Hezb. ground assault is imminent into parts of western Syria. They will most likely be backed by Russian warplanes and attack helicopters.

Interesting question I just say asked on the Telegraph.

Russia, Iran, Syrian Gov. and Hezb have raised the stakes with airstrikes and a soon to be ground offensive.

Will the Saudi coalition, a major supporter of the targets of the recent air strikes, up the anti in return?

Wrong. Obama is letting Russia do some work for once.

Let them spend some money in Syria, and take out some ISIS. Russia is grasping at straws. Our alliance in the old soviet block is VERY strong. I work on the training base here in Germany, and speak to all the different countries that train here.
We are united in showing strength against his little tinkering. We just did a a giant convoy from my area to Estonia. Mostly people were lining up with US flags, and people cheering us all the way. We were greeted as rock stars.

Rev, Obama is not "letting" Putin do anything. Putin is doing and Obama is struggling to respond. Russia blindsided America with this. Also Russia is not attacking ISIS at all. They are hitting everyone else. The plan is to wipe out everyone else till it is only the Assad gov. and IS left. Then the "west" will have a choice to make. Per reports at least.

As for this "grasping at straws" I disagree as well. China, Iran, Syria, Iraq (this ignores regional supporters of China and Iran like Belarus and Cambodia) and associated groups does not sound like grasping at straws. Russia is growing in strength and influence.

As for the old Soviet Bloc countries. I agree, the perception of America in countries like Poland, Estonia and Latvia is very good.

I dont agree. Struggling to respond? What would be a better course of actions? lol. And taking out Assad is not the answer. As bad as he is what awaits to fill that vacuum is probably much worse. There is no blind siding here. Putin is just poking around in a new place because hes shut down everywhere else. Russia doesnt need to be completely feared either. Whats your solution? Seriously? Deny him access? Start a war over Syria? We shouldnt even be in there to begin with. We are watching them closely, as they are us. Its two superpowers puffing up their chest. Only we have a lot more support, and are leading the fight. Do you realize all the troops we've "secretly" put on the boarder with russia. Putin is shut down there, now hes trying somewhere else. big bold responses arent always the best stoked. come on.

We are stronger in the soviet block than really ever before. Bush did some good things in Poland, and Obama has continued to strengthen the ties. We also work very closely with Romania, Czech Republic, and Bulgaria.
