What's new

Don't look now, but...

Funny how franklin ESPed my thoughts, though slightly differently. I logged in for the first time in a while to post something like "seems like Burke is playing far less than would be best for the team of late." Eyeball test made me want to look cause I've been quite happy with him lately. And this from a guy so ready to trade him after last year.

So checked and he's +54 over 418 minutes since the start of January which is VERY solid numbers. Not that I don't see an improvement in Neto as well, but with a +1 over 396 minutes in the same time period my gut feel from eyeball check seemed confirmed that Burke is outplaying Neto.

People thinking, it's chemistry with starters? Belief that Neto is better long-term prospect? Quin hate's Burkes D? Personally, I don't buy any of those but love to hear what ya'll think. Personally think Burke should be playing 26-28 minutes per not the 20ish he's been playing lately.
He has taken his offensive game to a new level, like night and day more effective. If he can do that with defense, Neto goes to the bench. Some guys with big shortcomings use BBIQ to mask them. Jingles uses positioning etc to defend. It's mind boggling he is not more of a mismatch due to lack of athleticism. If Trey ups his defensive IQ to negate some of his lack of size, he gets the start.

He is playing less of late and the jazz are on their longest winning streak of the season.
Lololololol

We have not beat any good teams during this streak and have had home games. But still. Lolololololol

You're citing players who benefit from the system rather than creating the majority of their shots like Trey does. Trey gets assisted only 8.7% on fg 10-14', 12.5% on 5-9', and 15.7% on <5'. Ramon Sessions gets assisted 33.3%, 27.8%, and 48.9% respectively. Shaun Livingston is even higher assisted % (78.0, 40.9, 18.9, and also 100% from the 20-24' range).

Put Trey into those winning systems and he's likely to skyrocket his percentages just like any other player.

I'm not questioning the improvement really. It's definitely apparent he is shooting better.

I know you looked up the other players I mentioned. I just don't necessarily think it is incredible. I'd be much more thrilled with ~40% 3-point and many more shots around the rim.

He is bad on D though. Like "I don't give a ****" bad. His lazy stance is what puts him half step behind slow guards.

Is there a good historical comparison to Burke and those FGM assisted% numbers?

I always thought Bobby Jackson would be a good person for Burke to aspire to, but the numbers don't match up in that department.

I think he would play more but he makes some bone head plays once in a while and gets branched for it. Such as the other night in the 4th he came down and drove in for an off balance out of the offense shot that wasn't close. Neto couldn't replace him fast enough for the coach.

Very true. And I'm open to the possibility that there is something about Burke's play with our first unit that doesn't fit well despite his current play. However, IMHO this has more to do with a healthy Favs and Gobert together and clicking than it does with Burke's smaller time allotment ;-) Would love to crawl inside Snyder's head for the reason regardless.

Combined with the easy schedule lately.

I don't know if Burke playing less lately has helped the team get wins or not.

Too hard to say really

Neto's improved play has certainly helped, and it is part of the reason why Burke has been playing less.

I'm sure the only reason Burke isn't starting over Neto is because his talents are utilized best as a scoring guard spark plug off the bench. Neto is straight trash, a 3rd string guard (and 2 years older). Burke has gone downhill in assists every season but his scoring efficiency is way up. It's still meh @.514 TS%, but that's a very large 6% improvement from last season's yuck. If he can add another 3% to that and a couple more assists he will be a solid backup or even pushing top 20 starting pg.
