(CNN)Muhammad Ali, the legendary boxer who proclaimed himself "The Greatest" and was among the most famous and beloved athletes on the planet, died Friday in Phoenix, Arizona, a family spokesman said.Ali, 74, had been at a Phoenix hospital since Thursday with what spokesman Bob Gunnell had described as a respiratory issue.
The three-time heavyweight champion also had battled Parkinson's disease since 1984.
Laila Ali "truly appreciates the outpouring of love for her family, as she spends quality time with her dad," a statement issued by her business manager said.

To I say I'm crushed and in tears doesn't even scrape the surface.

He meant everything to my family, myself. My father particularly. Probably the first athlete name I ever learned.

I met him maybe 20 times. What an awesome dude. Earlier he was soooo funny, but was always a class act.

Jordan wasn't half the athlete, or a tenth of the man. Wish I could have met him.

You're right. Jordan never stood up for something like this:

Incredible courage!
 
We know many of the great things this man did but let's not paint him to be a God. I know we're all fallible but he had 9-10 children with 5-6 different women including four wives and 1-2 baby mamas.
