Remembering what Exum did for the Jazz and why management stands so firmly behind him

Wins count ...yes ,this shows how Dante was a major contributor to the best basketball played by the Jazz in years .

{Exum's 6'6" frame and ultra-quick feet have already made him a nightmare matchup for opposing point guards who are used to having a much easier time getting past the perimeter.

His ability to thwart opposing offenses at the point of attack has had a clear trickle-down effect on the entire Jazz defense.}

{Utah's Defense With Exum Starting Before January 22 NBA Rank After January 22 NBA Rank
Points Allowed 99.1 14th ........87.6 1st
FG% Allowed 46.4% 26th....... 41.4% 1st
3P% Allowed 37.3% 27th....... 33.7% 10th
Defensive Rating 106.8 27th...... 95.3 1st

NBA.com/stats}

{Utah's league-leading defensive rating of 89.6 has largely been credited to Rudy "The Stifle Tower" Gobert. He's no doubt been a monster, but Exum's individual defensive rating of 87.3 is easily better than Gobert's 90.9.}

So those that want to draft Wade Baldwin or trade for Jeff Teague think they can replace the PG perimeter defense of Exum and replicate the Wins need to show why we don't want this kind of defense and wins.If you're whole argument is that straight out of Australian high school Exum didn't show you enough offense then remember why he was drafted.

{Prior to the draft, Bleacher Report's Jonathan Wasserman wrote:

Exum will enter the draft with "scoring point guard" attached to his label. Like the Russell Westbrooks, Derrick Roses, Stephen Currys—Exum projects as a go-to option in the offense, yet one who can also initiate and run it.}

As the president, and perhaps sole member of the Baldwin fan camp, I most address some issues here. I do not want Baldwin to replace Exum. He's not as good. I want him in an off-ball role, and he can slide to on ball when needed. Combining his defensive potential with Exum's excites me, plus he's a good shooter.

I can't wait to watch Exum again btw. Love him.

That's not all on Exum. Gobert started after All star break that year as well. The combo of the two is amazing defensively.

Rudy and Dante compliment each other very well. Rudy had a great run after the all star break while Dante at the helm. This season was disappointing for Rudy cuz Dante wasn't running the show and I think Rudy suffered because of it.

Don't forget Elijah. Often would play 20 minutes a night and be on the opposing team's best wing.

True and only reinforces my point. Thanks.

It was a team effort which Exum absolutely contributed to. I'm very hopeful for him.

remember that I was hyping Baldwin before I knew your affections. I also agree with how you're envisioning him being used.

Definitely. Jazz (ORtg/DRtg/NetRtg) with Millsap, Exum, and Gobert was (100.7/90.7/10.0) and a 23-14 record vs (99.5/98/1.5) and a 38-44 record when just Exum and Gobert

I wanted to check what the teams Drtg was with Exum starting and Gobert on the bench was 103...Sooo pretty bad. Most of the defensive damage came with Gobert starting, and as previously mentioned, Millsap.

All we know is what worked. And that was Exum + Gobert + a scrappy DLeague wing defender gave us a historically good defense.
That should be the model.

Baldwin was a great catch and shoot guy. I think he can become a suffocating defender if he wants to be. Would give us some Exum insurance in case injuries or he becomes a bust. If both guys developed we have playmaking/ballhandling and positional flexibility that would BALLZ.

There's literally no downside. At minimum, good shooter with elite defensive potential. And let me tell you, if Snyder can get Rodney Hood to be even an average defender then he can get Baldwin to be close to elite. And if we have two great perimeter defenders + Hayward that can properly funnel guys into two great interior defenders + the ability to switch on the outside (even Favors is pretty good with this), then that's an incredibly suffocating defense.

one overlooked factor is that Rudy seemed to be able to catch Exums passes ok unlike a lot of other passes. X's return should help Rudy's offense as well. I can't wait to see him play again, going to go see him live at the Australian nation team vs Pac12 all stars in July here

Nothing wrong with this model either.....6'8" Rodney Hood next to Exum 6'6",with Hayward 6'8" at the perimeter.Lots of length in front of Favors and Gobert ......Oh wait ! That was the lineup when the Jazz had their best run in years.
Now add more length and speed with the 12th pick. Like FurkmanKorkmaz or Dejaunte Murray or Skal Lebassiere

That's a good point. Dante had a knack of getting Rudy the ball where he wanted.

these.

The following statement will be wildly misunderstood by 99% of jazzfanz: I see flickers of Stockton in Baldwin. Specifically in the economy of his crossover and the way he uses his body to get off driving shots. He's obviously bigger and longer. Anyway... I like. I'd be happy with him. (notice that I didn't say ANYTHING about passing, court vision, etc. TIA)

I'm about to go into a deep dive on Baldwin. You guys have me intrigued.

I think right from the get go Rudy will be more engaged on offense ,ready for the lobs from Exum AND ready for more shotblocking opportunities as Exum funnels the PG's to him
