Following potential 2017 draftees...

Somebody needs to make the calculation about how much over/under expected value all NBA teams are running in the lottery. I would bet teams like Boston and the Lakers are running like gods in the lottery.

It worked out well for the league didn't it? The Lakers jump to 2nd so they keep their pick and can take Lonzo Ball if they want. Philly doesn't get the Lakers pick this year, but gets Sacramento's in the top 3. The Celtics get the #1 pick so they can keep it or trade it and compete with the Cavs in the diluted Eastern Conference. All is right with the world.

If I were the commissioner, I wouldn't leave the lottery to pure chance. The media value of having a star player in big markets is too high, and the league needs that revenue. That said, whatever happens, the league always has plausible deniability. Those teams had good odds of getting those picks.

Chad Ford's first mock draft after the lottery last night has some interesting picks..

Malik Monk at 3

Luke Kennard at 12

Harry Giles at 14

Justin Jackson at 21

Tony Bradley at 24

Frank Jackson at 25

Johnathan Jeanne at 29

Moritz Wagner at 30

He basically said Wagner will probably go back to school but he played decent at the combine. Said there would be some intrigue since he has German passport which means he could be a draft-and-stash prospect.

I don't like Bradley or Wagner at all with our picks though. Things will change once he gets more intel for sure though.

LOL if the Jazz take Wagner at 30.

So why didnt the Knicks get into the top 3? Them getting the #1 pick is the best as far as helping big markets. NYC is the biggest market in the world and they have been terrible for the past 2 decades. If the NBA had any reason to rig the lottery, it would be to help the Knicks.

And with KP they have a legit young star to build with.

If the top 3 picks were NY, LA, Boston that might have been too obvious. NY still has Porzingis and Carmelo. It's a media circus regardless.

Then why give Boston the top pick if they are already really good and doing well for the NBA? If it was truly rigged, giving the Knicks a top 3 pick and bumping Boston down to 4 would be optimal.

The lottery picks are important assets for the league to help teams. It wouldn't make sense to give them all out by chance even with weighted odds based on league record.

Some examples:

The league sells the Pelicans franchise to a new ownership group, and the Pelicans get a #1 pick to help them get started.

A new ownership group takes over the Bucks, and the Bucks get a #2 pick to help build their franchise.

Fans are rioting in Cleveland after Lebron leaves. Cleveland gets a #1 pick and then another #1 pick to help give them hope for the future.

If the Lakers lost their pick this year, it would have been a disaster for the Lakers and would have hurt the league's TV deals, which would have affected all the teams. We're talking hundreds of millions of dollars over the next few years. You really want to leave that to chance?

I don't think all the picks are rigged. Probably just one or two each year.

You can make a narrative to support conspiracy theories for any team....

1. Boston - Fultz – This is one of the easiest picks in this draft. He is the best player.
2. LA – Jackson – Surprise the lakers take the player that actually fits their team and their future.
3. Philly – Monk – a stretch but I feel lowry is going to sign in philly and Monk is the better fit.
4. Phoenix – Ball – phoenix can move on from Bledsoe and get a true pointguard
5. Sacramento –Tatum – they keep building a very good team
6. Orlando – Fox – They need a PG who can score
7. Minnesota – Isaac – they are looking to be a very scary team in the future
8. New York - Frank N – rumors have it the knicks love him and he is a good fit
9. Dallas – Markannen – Nowitski as a mentor is ideal. PG is also a big need
10. Sacramento – Smith jr – with tatum in the fold pg is their next big need and they are estatic for smith
11. Charlotte - Anunoby – they are hoping for a future 4 out of anunoby
12. Detroit – Z. Collins – nice fit next to drummond
13. Denver –j Jackson – need to get younger on the wings
14. Miami – Mitchell – great fit for the building heat
15. Portland – Kurucs – His shooting will be a perfect fit
16. Chicago – Kennard – Shooting again
17. Milwaukee – anigbogu – Defense is his key
18. Indiana – Patton – Could play with turner
19. Atlanta – J Collins – Saftey if they cant re-sign millsap
20. Portland – Rabb – still trying to solve their PF problems
21. OKC – Ojeleye – hoping for the future 3\4 that are popular now
22. Brooklyn – Ferguson – they need talent and ferguson has it
23. Toronto – Leaf – stretch 4 they have needed
24. Utah – Hartenstein – 4\5 that will be great to groom of the bench
25. Orlando – Lydon – he is actually a nice fit next to gordon
26. Portland – Giles – BPA at this point and they can gamble with one of their picks
27. Brooklyn – Adebayo – looking at becoming bigger
28. LAL – Diallo – he falls into their laps and they are still building so nice fit
29. San Antonio - Pasecniks – with Gasol on the downward part of his career they get a big who can shoot
30. Utah – F Jackson – he is a 1\2 that is a nice fit in their offense. Insurance if they can re-sign hill

You don't really think LAL is passing on Lonzo, do you? There are GMs who think he's better than Fultz. I'd put them neck and neck. No way Magic doesnt take Ball.

I think it's definitely possible. Ball doesnt fall past 3 though. No way in hell is anyone taking Malik Monk ahead of Ball. But I could see Jackson or Fox being drafted by LAL over Ball.

Though I think Pelinka/Johnson being in their 1st year, I find it hard to think they would go against the consensus of what people think they are going to do. I think the majority of people on the internet think Jackson is the BPA after Fultz is gone though.
