Could Rubio become an Elite Corner 3pt Shooter?

According to his shot charts he is 5/9 from the corners so far this year (and this is actually not including tonight's most recent game, from which I believe he had two more corner 3's). Pretty good stuff.

Distance is clearly the biggest factor in what makes Rubio a poor outside shooter as he is an elite mid-range shooter. The corner 3 might prove to be a sweet spot just on the outer edge of his range.

Woah.

All aboard the run away Cy-Train.

"Elite mid-range shooter"... really?? DeRozen has elite mid range scoring, Rubio has 1 spot.

What makes you class.him as elite?

On topic; I could see Rubio shooting 40% from the corners. But, I still dont trust his shot.

Edit: Ben Simmoms has a better shot at averaging a triple double than Rubio has at becoming an elite shooter from anywhere.

Rubio shot 45% last year on mid-range shots. That's makes him elite. I think the only PG who was higher in the mid-range is Paul.

He’s been good from the corners the last two seasons as well, not on huge volume of course, but I’m willing to believe it.

I found this interesting from Andy Larsen’s piece today:

“Of the 58 jump shots that Rubio took coming into tonight's game, he took only 10 that had a defender within four feet. 48 of them were either open or wide open, per NBA.com.”

Come on man.. surely thats just cherry picking stats. No one has ever call Rubio a good shooter let alone elite.

I.mean, even Rudy is 2/2 (100%) on his mid range jumpers..

Ricky shot 45% on 444 shots from mid-range last year. Whether or not others called him a good shooter is irrelevant - the fact is he did shoot an elite % from mid-range at a high volume.

Ricky relies heavily on whoever is coaching him, so having a coach like Quin that encourages players to shoot when they're open might have boosted his confidence in that area. And it is showing, this Ricky is starting to look different from Minny's.

He doesn't need to be "elite" he just needs to be enough of a threat to warrant being covered. I think this is well within the realm of possibility.

If Rubio really shot 45% on 444 mid-range jump shots last year, there's no denying that is an elite FG%. I bet only a handful of players shot that well from mid-range last year. I never would have thought he shot that well. I even have my GF saying, "no, don't shoot" now when he shoots. Lol

Rubio gets it. Stirs up the crowd, Great Handles. Excellent Spanish floor general. So glad we got him Thabo & Udoh

Dare I say Rubio is a good shooter, late in games tho, you can tell when he's tired cuz his shot mechanics change to line drive shots.

We very well could be witnessing his breakout season. Wolves fans felt this coming at the end of last year. I'm loving Ricky so far.

Small sample size, but I’m loving the way Snyder is coaching him.

Rubio’s career averages -

2 point - 2.5 / 6.4 attempts per game .369 average
3 point - 0.7 / 2.1 attempts per game .315 average
Total FG - 3.2 / 8.6 attempts per game .375 average
FT - 3.2 / 3.9 attempts per game .830 average
4.2 rebounds per game
8.5 assists per game
2.1 steals per game
10.3 points per game

Through seven games with the Jazz. . .

2 point - 3.4 / 7.0 attempts per game .490 average
3 point - 1.9 / 5.3 attempts per game .396 average
Total FG - 5.3 / 12.3 attempts per game .430 average
FT - 3.3 / 3.7 attempts per game .885 average
4.9 rebounds per game
7.3 assists per game
2.1 steals per game
15.7 points per game

The only thing that has dropped is assists (slightly), and that will improve as he gets more comfortable in the offense and as Gobert, Hood, Jingles and Mitchell start actually converting and scoring better off of the good looks he gives them. His turnovers are a concern, but he’s still a pest on defense, he still looks to set up his teammates. Quin is coaching him to take his own shot on open looks and he’s improved his usage, production and efficiency. There’s still a lot of room for growth. His shot still looks pretty ugly at times. . . but if he keeps improving like he has from the middle of last season, his price tag will be a damn steal.

Reminds me of the jumps that Hayward made under Snyder leading up to his All Star season last year. Baby steps at first, but then a major breakout when things start clicking for the whole team.

Rubio plays with fire. He wants to win every game, and every play. His teammates love him, and he clearly wants to make everyone around him better. I cannot think of any other type of basketball I would rather watch than this type of team.

It is so plain that Rubio loves playing for Quinn Snyder, and that is all about the confidence that Quinn has placed in him.

So... what I read there is that teams are daring him to beat them. And he is responding by beating them. If they honestly dare put pressure on him I expect ya'll know what happens, right? He will proceed to get into the paint and destroy teams with his passing. His shooting will setup some of the simplest offensive basketball we have seen in years.

My favorite moments from last night's game were:

1. The mavs cut the lead to a 5 point game... and then D Mitch stole the ball from Nowitzki and passed it to Thabo for the layup. We proceeded on a 5 - 0 run and then another run to close out the game. Game changer and the crowd energy ensued.

2. Ricky Rubio walking away from the bench during a Mavs timeout and pumping his arms to the crowd.

There is going to be a tight competition for fan favorite this year. I can see Rudy, Rubio, Mitchell, Thabo, and Ingles as all potential candidates. Go Jazz!

This. I have been impressed. Frankly if he can hit a 3 from anywhere, corner or whatever, at 35% it will be enough to pull defenses out. And I think he will be better than that. His form looks forced though, not getting his legs under him, but so far it is promising. I love hearing opposing announcers say "wow, who knew Rubio could shoot 3's" right after they say "the defender is sagging off Rubio, as he should, since Rubio can't shoot". Hilarious.

Don't forget Udoh as a sleeper favorite, and Joe Jesus as and old stand-by. This team has a lot of players that are easy to like. Gonna be fun even if we don't win a ton.

The thing that I like most is that he is taking more outside shots, but is STILL getting to the line at the same pace. Oftentimes, a player that "focuses on his outside game" will stop trying to go inside and will hover at the three point line. Rubio is not doing that. It could very well be that Rubio has suffered from crappy coaching his entire career and really is the guy that we are now seeing.
