Ok since I woke up and cannot go back to sleep I might as well start a new thread.

Do you believe in ghosts? Have you ever had any experiences that you cannot explain or that would best be explained by something like a ghost? Do you like cheese?

Anyway, we have been living in this house since last October, having moved to Reno for a new job. Shortly after we moved in, the house was broken into and they emptied my wife's jewelry box. Lots of things gone with real sentimental value, but since we had just moved in and so much was still boxed up we kind of got lucky, I guess, that is all they took.

So for a couple weeks after that I was in the house alone while my wife was getting the kids and everything else ready to join me in Reno. After the break-in, I jumped at every single sound. I was able to rationally explain most things as just a jumpy mind due to the break-in. But a couple of weird things happened after my family got here, and something like that woke me up tonight too.

One thing that stands out was about a month after my family joined me here. The bedrooms in our house are all upstairs. I work fairly late at night, so when I got home my family was all in bed. The house is hard to keep warm in the winter so everyone bundles up at night, and my son and youngest daughter bury themselves in blankets.

Well I was downstairs playing around on the computer. Upstairs when I got home it was dark and quiet. I had checked on everyone so I knew they were all in bed. I suddenly heard what sounded like a door opening fast and hitting a wall followed by another thump. I started and ran up the stairs.

As I got to the top of the stairs, I immediately saw a garbage can in the middle of the floor right at the top of the stairs. It appeared to have been thrown as it was still moving and as I reached the top step it fell over, finally coming to rest. It was the garbage can from the kids' bathroom, which was now open with the light on. Both kids' doors were closed. I went into each room quickly to find both kids completely buried in blankets as they were when I first checked on them when I got home, both sound asleep.

There is no way one of them was able to go to the bathroom, kick or throw the garbage can into the hall and get back into their bedroom and back to sleep before I got to the top of the stairs, when I got there fast enough to see the garbage can still moving. Needless to say it freaked me out somewhat.

Tonight I heard a kid go to the bathroom. My son sleeps very deeply and sometimes gets lost and wanders around the house. He did this tonight, waking me up. I got him back to bed, turned off all the lights, went into my room and shut the door. As soon as the door was shut, I saw light flash underneath the door. I opened my door and saw the kids' bathroom light was now on. I went over and turned it off, went back to my room, closed the door, and again saw light underneath the door. Opening the door, I found the bathroom light on again. I checked and both kids are sound asleep in their rooms. I know it wasn't my oldest daughter as her room is nowhere near that bathroom. My room is closer to it than her room. So then I couldn't go back to sleep.

So, any of you have anything like this happen before? Do you believe in ghosts or anything like that, and why or why not?

I personally do not, but the few things that have happened in this house I must admit are freaking me out a little bit.

This is sort of an area of expertise for me. From April to October my friends and I go on weekly adventures to haunted/scary places. I'm a huge horror nut, a frequent to haunted houses, and I read a lot of stories and do all sorts of research into paranormal, extraterrestrial, and supernatural entities and so forth. I obviously am a believer in this kind of stuff, although I've never seen a haunt walking around or anything. I have however had some pretty crazy things happen that are beyond explanation. When you do things like that on a regular basis, whether you're brave or not, your mind has a way of playing tricks on you. Most of the things you see and hear can be explained, but there have been a few times where we couldn't find a thing.

The first time was when I was in the 8th grade, my friends and I went to The Old Mill for the first time. This was back before it was completely fenced off, and you could still find a way into the yard. Well we took a video camera and taped while we walked around. There wasn't anything too suspicious, it was just creepy. Somebody noticed something moving around in the highest window (to be honest, it looked like a bag to me) but then when the camera was turned toward the window, the camera shut off. Later on when we went back and watched the tape, when my friend turned the camera towards the window there was a loud noise and then it just turned to static.

About two years ago, my friends and I went to this house in Layton where there was a pretty messed up murder/suicide. The house in right in the middle of the suburbs, but it's on its own in the sense that it's surrounded by trees and shrubbery so you can barely see it. Well it's abandoned now, with everything left as it was when they lived there, so we decided to go in one night. There just so happened to be some people there that were doing EPV scanning and had all of the ghost hunter technology on them. Well at one instance they asked that if the ghosts wanted us to leave, to give us a sign. There were three loud bangs in the house. It turns out that was just the neighbor that likes to play tricks on the people that come to the house, using a fence leaning up against the house that's tied to some fish wire. Anyway, we went on doing our thing, and then one of the rooms we walked into was just freezing. Not the whole room, just in certain spots. It early August when we went.

Last September there were two days in a row that suspicious things happened. The first night, my dad and I were hanging out at his place in the living room when we heard a loud noise that continued for about five seconds. At first we thought maybe it was the cat knocking something over, but then we realized that the cat was with us. We looked in the hallway and the garbage can was in the middle of the floor, still standing up. It was completely full, probably close to about ten pounds worth of stuff in it, and it moved about eight feet without tipping over. The next night my friend and I were hanging at her house in the afternoon. She has cathedral ceiling living room, about twenty feet high. There's a ridge about 13 feet high with some decorative stuff on it, including these little black shoes. We were coming downstairs and realized that the shoes were in the entry way into the kitchen, on the floor, and side by side rather than knocked over. There was nobody else home, and her dog wouldn't have been able to get onto the ridge. So we grabbed the ladder, put them back, and the left to dinner. When we came back, there was a stereo on and the shoes were back on the ground. We put the shoes back, turned the stereo off, and started watching a movie. Three more times that night the stereo came on, full volume, blasting through the house.

Also last fall, we spent a night at Heritage Park because it's supposedly haunted and we were making a movie for my friend's annual Halloween themed event called An October Evening at the Masonic Temple downtown. We know one of the security guards so he let us spend the night. We did some exploring and there was a house with two lit candles in the upstairs window. The security guard went and blew them out, only to find them back on again when we passed the house ten minutes later. This happened two more times. The place that we slept belonged to a woman whose husband was off at war, so she would rent it out as a hotel of sorts for travelers. Rumor has it that if you sleep there, she'll try to take care of you like she did her guests. We heard her rocking chair creaking multiple times and heard various footsteps upstairs all night. All of the noises that we used in the movie were noises that we captured with a recorder while sleeping there that night. We also did a scene at the cemetery there, which is creepy beyond belief because all of the headstones are completely blank. When we played back our footage from that scene, we picked up unrecognizable voices in the audio.

Finally, a couple of weeks ago my dad and I watched The Fourth Kind at his place. As the movie ended, a bowl of healing rocks on his coffee table tipped over without any help. No wind, the cat was outside, and the bowl was about four inches from the edge of the table. After that, of course, the credits for the movie roll and it's comprised of a bunch of real 911 calls about UFO sightings. The very first call was from Salt Lake, and so was the last. Eerie stuff.

There's been a couple more questionable things that have happened before, but these are among the most memorable, scariest, and mind-boggling.

I lived in a "haunted house" and had several very interesting experiences. One in particular essentially made my wife and I pack up and move within a couple of weeks of it happening.

Dtol, have you ever spent any time at the Mercur cemetery? I've had a few interesting experiences there as well.

Never heard of it. Where is it at?

I often get sleep paralysis. One of the first times I did, I woke up not being able to move, my bed was shaking uncontrollably and was heating up like an oven. It got so hot I thought I was going to die. When I was finally able to move and run out of my room, my whole back was severely red like it had a sun-burn on it. This is a true story, I lie not.

I don't believe in any of this stuff. (I know, big surprise right)

However, about 5 years ago I did have one really weird experience that was not easily explainable. I was dating a girl at the time that was charitably describable as a really bad idea and my goofball friend had just picked up one of those tarot decks and books that they sell at Barnes and Noble. He had gone through the book and the deck and kept trying to get his friends to let him read their tarot. Since it was the summer I wasn't doing anything particularly important and finally gave in. He was going through some specific formation that was supposed to be a relationship-diagnostic or some other rubbish and he got to a point when he was supposed to turn over a card representing what this girl was bringing to the relationship. The card, which appeared normal in all other respects with the same backing as all the other tarot cards, was totally black when he turned it over. Just a solid deep black. A literal nothingness. This was a little spooky because it was pretty accurate and also didn't seem to be part of the standard deck.

We couldn't find any reference to such a card in the accompanying book and my friend swore he had never seen the card before when he had gone through the deck. The package the book and cards came in listed the contents as containing 78 cards and we counted all the cards out and, including the totally black card, had 79. It appeared to have literally generated from nothingness while being made of the correct card stock and having backing images consistent with the rest of the deck.

Haven't done Tarot since.

Do I believe in ghosts? Yes. There's no way that John Stockton and Karl Malone could have played for so long and never won a title. So many shots, fluke plays, somehow missed calls (like the shot clock in game 6), can only be explained by hells angels screwing over the Utah Jazz. There's no way any rational person can believe that Dick Bavetta wasn't possessed by a demon in game 6.

Never heard of it. Where is it at?

It's located south of Tooele in Tooele County. It's a very old mining ghost town from the late 1800's. The cemetery is located on top of a hill and there are maybe 2 dozen graves is all. At least graves that are clearly marked. I've never seen anything while there but myself and others report feeling very specific emotions and physical reactions while at the site.

Here's a few pics from the last time I was there.

This is one that caught my attention. A glowing orb over the grave that the camera caught.

Was this photo taken with the flash on?

No. The camera was set to a very slow shutter speed and set on a tri-pod to minimize blur from movement. That's the other aspect that is interesting. If it were something like a firefly or light reflection off of a speck of dust it would be a continuous blur across the frame.

Of the several dozen pics I took that night this is the only one that exhibits this type of anomaly. I'm not saying that it is supernatural or the spirit of a dead miner or anything like that. It was just unexpected when I went through the photos and I didn't have an explanation.

Is Heritage Park the same as This Is The Place?

What are some other good places around SLC that my ghost hunter buddies could go check out?

Yes. Spending the night there is pretty freaky. There's the SLC Cemetery, the abandoned mental hospital off of Wasatch, The Old Mill (if you can find a way to get in the fences), Memory Grove, Ted Bundy's shack and cellar, my favorite is the house in Layton, but it's out of the way, some good places up the Cottonwoods, the gully behind the Capitol, the gully on 13th east and about 104th south, a couple of rumored ones in the avenues, and there's a lot where a home that was occupied by a cult leader burned down and all of the rubble is still there just off of Wasatch and in the 60th-70th south range. I'll find out where it is for sure. You go up a small road in a pretty wealthy living community, and on the way up there's a brick wall that has about a fifteen foot opening into it that is total darkness. Go up there and that's where the remains are. There's remains from a cellar hidden behind some trees, a bunch of rubble, burn marks, and a random, creepy shack. I'll post more when I think of them.

Marcus-That looks awesome. I'll have to go check it out. I'll take some pictures.

I grew up in a house that was built on an old pioneer apple orchard. I saw, very clearly and very plainly, a ghost/spirit/whatever you want to call it, on two occasions. I can think of over 20 different experiences I had in the house that would make anyone a believer. The most interesting thing to happen wasn't even in the house, nor did it have anything to do with ghosts. My friends dad was getting remarried and after talking to this lady for the first time, we put two and two together and found out that she used to live in the house before we bought it. The first thing she asked me was, "Ever have anything 'strange' happen?" She went on to tell me a few stories that were creepy and similar to what I had experienced.

Besides seeing the two ghosts, the scariest thing to happen was one day I got out of my shower and there were cryptic symbols all over my mirror in the steam. They were fresh, not old stuff. The bathroom door was still shut and locked from the inside. The second scariest thing to happen was one night I woke up to this odd clicking noise coming from the desk in my room. I turned on my bedside lamp and saw very plainly the keys on my computer keyboard just clicking away. They stopped about 20 seconds after I turned the light on.

No joke - I've chased two ghosts from houses in my lifetime. Although I'm pretty sure they were both friendly ghosts.

So if there's something strange in your neighborhood - who ya gonna call.......?

Not candrew - I got my own problems.
