Millsap's future impacts Jazz draft strategy

First, I'd be surprised if the Jazz traded Millsap, or Jefferson, or Favors. I seriously doubt that happens.
If the decision is to keep Millsap at PF, it makes little sense to draft Kanter at #3, as we already have a young vet, Jefferson, a scoring machine, who I doubt is going away either. Then there's the up-and-coming very athletic Favors who we got for Deron Williams. That's 3 bigs; so why draft ANOTHER big at #3?
Now if the Jazz plan to move Millsap to SF, drafting Kanter makes a lot of sense the more I read about him. I wasn't crazy 'bout him at first, but he seems to have a good all-round game, can get physical and play D, and appears to be in tremendous condition, unusual for a big man.
With Millsap playing primarily SF, he might struggle defensively on the perimeter, but should be dominant in the low post and on the boards. Knowing his work ethic, he seems to be able to develop whatever part of his game that's needed; I can live with that.
That would leave them with needing another PG/SG at #12, as I doubt Price is back next season.

Millsap is not a SF. The Jazz won't trade anyone...yet. Millsap and Jefferson will start until Favors takes the spot from one of those two. If they draft Kantor, and he pans out, the loser of Favors/Jefferson will be traded (hopefully Jefferson). Millsap will eventually be moved to the bench.

UNLESS Millsap loses the starting spot and demands a trade. Then he is traded and the Jazz hold onto Favors and Jefferson and if they draft Kantor, Kantor until one demands out.

Millsap is a great guy to have on the bench IMO but isn't someone I want to rely on as a starter for an extended period. I also don't think he should be expected to play major minutes as a 3. I think Kanter clogs things up too much...and don't really think he'll pan out anyways.

We really need to find a way to get Williams. If that means we can't get our PG this year, so be it. I'm OK with Harris for another year.

Harris
Hayward/CJ
Williams/CJ
and AJ, Favors, Memo, and Sap splitting the minutes down low is a pretty solid start to a rebuiled IMO.

Even with all the depth in the front court the Jazz are dumb if they pass on Kanter if they perceive his value to be higher than say Knight's. With a top three pick you are insane to pass up on top talent IMO.

That "top talent" of Kanter has never been tested against the top US players in any meaningful way. That scares the crap out of me.

I love Millsap, but his trade value is probably at an all-time high. As hard as he works, he is always going to be undersized. I could see the Jazz pulling the trigger on Millsap because they could get good value. I see Kanter as a 15 to 20 minute a night center backing up big Al. As much as I love Favors, I can't imagine him as a 5.

I agree he has his question marks. But if the Jazz feel his talent is a level above Knight's, they have to make the pick. You just don't pass up better talent this high in the draft. The Bowie/Jordan example is the most famous. Bobby Knight reportedly had a conversation with the Blazers GM at the time who resisted Knight's attempts to sell Jordan with their draft pick. Their GM said "we need a center," to which Knight's replay was "play Jordan at center." Of course it's highly doubtful that the gap between Kanter and Knight is that big, but the same logic just makes more sense to me.

But who knows, it could be that they think Knight is just as talented or more and pick him because of that. I just hope they don't pick him as a reach.

Well that's kinda my whole point. I think Knight turns out to be the better player.

Milsap's comments: "I'm a starter" at the locker clean-out can't be ignored. The team will have to address the issue somehow. But I'm of the mind that if he already has a problem with Flavors, adding Kanter won't change anything for him. Coach Corbin is the one who is in a tough spot here, and his job would be made tougher if koc drafts Kanter. I think KOC wants to put Ty in a position to succede.

The Jazz are in an interesting place. They are trying to re-define who they are for just the second time in 25 years. After Karl & John retired the team seemed to be without an identity but Jerryled that team of cast-offs and leftovers and won 41 games. Jerry became the identity.

Now the Jazz are trying to redefine themselves with a new coach, and without a star player. We still don't know what kind of system Ty wants to run, what kind of players he wants. And none of us knows which current players don't want to play for Corbin or have been problems. I think Draft night will be interesting, but it should only be the beginning of moves made by KOC.

I would like to hear why you don't think Favors would not be a good 5 for us? He is strong, can leap, is tough, good rebounder and is about the same size as Dwight Howard. Again why?
