Feast or Famine Free Agency

I’d like a young guy to (hopefully) add to the playoff rotation.

Joe Harris / Mario Hezonja would be my top two targets. I’d try to land one of them with the MLE and hope they take a jump under Snyder.

I still think it’s important to try to keep Favors, but to also plan for lineup and rotation adjustments when the playoffs roll around. That’s a big reason why I like the idea of swapping Burks for Carroll too.

I can agree with that. Something else to consider. Favors has gotten progressively better with his 3 the last few years and he's got a good work ethic. Say Utah signs him to a 4 year deal and he blossoms enough to shoot 35% on volume from the corner, in addition to everything else? Hmmm.....

35% from the corner is pretty poor and even that would be a huge improvement. I don't have any real expectations for Favors as a 3pt shooter.

Hezonja and BJelly both shot about that last year from both corners combined and we want to sign either as a stretch 4. I fail to see a difference if Favors improved to that point.

The difference is that Bjelica and Hezonja are already good 3 point shooters that have the potential to become great shooters and Favors is a terrible shooter at this point who has the potential to become a decent corner 3 shooter at best.. Bjelica shot 41.5% from 3 this year and can hit from all over the floor, not just the corner.

He never will. He's known about the three point line for a while now. We can project all we want but he's not a great FT shooter... shot a poor percentage on 3s this year... assuming he gets to 35% is a big assumption.

Yeah, but look at both their shot charts. They play in offenses that dont generate open corner 3's or their coaches dont put them in the position where they get the open corner 3's.

Curry shot 35.9% on just 67 combined shots from the two corners this past season. It doesn’t mean he sucks.

He did shoot 44.1% on 390 three point shots from the one angle to his left of the top of the perimeter.

So long as our guys are spaced and camped out at spots at which they shine brightest, I’d be not too worried. BJelly may be best on angles like Curry. We can have Ingles and others in the corners. That’s the key. Find them different ways to get them open looks in these spots where they’re best.

I would guess the only time Steph gets corner 3's are in desperation situations where the clock is running down or something and he has to force a step back. He probably doesnt get a lot of corner 3 spot-up attempts.

True. But much of that is by design I’m sure. He excels to the left of the top of the perimeter so he either runs the point and takes shots from there or comes off of screens and takes shots from there because it’s from where he shoots best.

I totally agree that there will be a bunch of max contracts out of the gate...

Then a handful of $10 - $15 mil range contracts on a few valuables.

Then a lot of minimum contracts.

The league is loving the Celtics model which is 3 max players, Rookies and minimums, and as few $6 - $15 million dollar contracts as possible.

So when a player thinks he deserves in that $6 - $15 range and no one wants to give them the money they are going to have to settle for short contracts methinks.

While dumping IT was key, the Celtics have some mammoth decisions in the coming years. With Tatum and Brown likely to command large paydays, do you trade Hayward to prepare to sign Tatum to a minimax? It will be hard to do if they are title contenders. Every team wants assets, but once you have them then it is decision time. Unfortunately, I think Ainge is up to the task.

Ingles would have to move to the 4 in a Rubio/DM/PG/Ingles/Gobert lineup. That's not entirely a bad idea, but I'd worry about Ingles getting bullied on the blocks.

NBA is about forcing your will on opponents. That team would force them to match small(ish) ball. Utah forced the same with Favors-Gobert last season but the counterweight could outgun them.

I'd still bring Ingles off the bench though if the miracle of signing George happened. Utah would be the deepest team in the NBA.

I find it hard to believe people are still pining for Pushoff P after watching him self destruct in the playoffs.

Guy shot 1 for 20-something in the clutch. That's not a physical problem or a talent problem, it's a mental problem.

Don't want none of that for 25+ mil.

BJelly played in an offense that is poorly suited for him. The Jazz have a great opportunity to sign a guy to a modest deal with untapped resources - much like Ingles when he was trying to make it in LAC.

You pick up a guy like BJelly on a mid-level type deal and then make your big move in 2019.
