Getting the ball first is an advantage. If it wasn't then you would see the coin toss winner choose not to get the ball on occasion. That never happens though. Both teams want to win the coin toss and both teams want to get the ball first because it is advantageous to do so.
I don't see how anyone can argue otherwise.

But sports isn't about fair. It's about competition.
If you think having a coin toss makes things fair cause it's 50/50 then they should just do coin tosses for everything to make sports fair.
Why make a team earn home field advantage? Why not just do a coin toss. That would be fair.
Why should one team get Tom Brady and bill bellichek? They should do a coin toss before each game to see which team gets Brady and billicheck cause that would be more fair.

No, sports is about competition. Teams get home field advantage through earning it. Patriots got Brady and billicheck cause they earned by drafting and developing Brady and by finding and hiring billicheck.

There are advantages all over in sports. They are earned though. There are reasons behind those advantages.

For some reason in nfl overtimes everything about sports and competition changes. Suddenly an advantage is given, rather than earned, for no reason at all.

What you are talking about here is that the Patriots earned the win by driving down and scoring in their first possession. I agree with you about that.
What they didn't earn was first possession of the ball. That was given to them via luck of a coin toss. Having the ball first is an advantage. That they did not earn.

In regards to the overtime rules, the only fair way to do it is a 50/50 coin toss to see who gets the ball, and in case there’s confusion, I’m fine with the overtime rule and therefore see the coin toss as the most fair way to decide who gets the ball. The defense just needs to do its job.

Or we could do it like this. Poor Buss

To be fair, it’s not a true 50/50. Visiting gets to call the toss.

I’m sure they could do studies about how many times a particular ref flips the coin and it comes up tails vs heads, etc.

To be clear, I’m not saying they would do that, but it’s possible.

So two evenly matched teams in that game to the point that they performed evenly, and one team should be rewarded over the other with getting the ball automatically when neither team had or gained an advantage in regulation of that single contest?

They would be rewarded over the other team by beating them in something competitive. Nothing automatic about it. First possession has to be earned. How are you not following?

Right now one of those two teams that performed evenly all game gets an advantage over the other team for absolutely no reason.
