What's new

Why are we still stuck with Tony Bradley?

I think I had said it in a previous reply - to be able to cover for backup center minutes in spot minutes or even multiple games for injuries (doesn't pass), show good upside or athleticism (doesn't pass), or show an ability to change the pace/style at the C spot like a stretch 5 (certainly doesn't pass).

He's not even a poor man's Zach Randolph, whom I've heard Tony compared to.

A homeless man’s Zach Randolph might be fair.

This is a fair question imo, but I'm cool with keeping him.

We aren't likely to pick up his 4th year option imo… think its about 3.5M. He would need to show something more concrete in pre-season and camp for that to happen.

I don't think he's a future piece... I don't think he's a piece I'd feel good about relying on for regular backup minutes yet... the Jazz likely think he's worth keeping around this year... if we really needed a roster spot or if we had an injury and someone better was available you could waive him. I think at this point in the offseason you just keep him and it's mostly because he's already guaranteed and DL isn't ready to take the L on this one yet. If they pick up his option for next year I'll be pissed.

Again it's not the money he's not costing us - for real championship contenders, that shouldn't matter AT ALL. We should be willing to go over the tax to make the most competitive and complete team ready to win the whole thing. It's the roster spot that it's costing us.....

And how do you propose that we would do that? You can't go out and sign free agents up to the tax level. You can go out and sign free agents only up to the salary cap level, unless you have an exception. You can go over the tax level to re-sign your own guys and later you can do trades with matching salaries where you stay over the cap. But right now if the Jazz cut Bradley they could basically sign some other minimum guy and that's it. Got any amazing free agents ready to push us over the top who are in that category?

P.S. I may have an over simplified view of the way the salary cap stuff works but I'm pretty sure the Jazz are limited now in what they could do if they got rid of Bradley.

He's a twenty year old kid who put up 20pts and 12rbs in the summer league and is on his rookie contract. Why would we cut him?

He's also worked on his body quite a bit and while he's obviously not the most athletic guy in the world, his movement has improved.

As of now he's got one NBA level skill, rebounding. It's worth developing him to see if he can continue to grow. It's not really costing us anything to find out.

Like who else would this guy rather have? Tyson Chandler?

Bradley looked like one of the top players in summer league.

Obviously he is. I was saying IF Rudy misses any time (and he SHOULD take off a couple games even just for rest), which means Ed David is probably starting, I'd want to see Jeff Green play backup center over Tony.
Well if Rudy misses time we are ****ed. Doesn't matter if Bradley is around or not

Bradley is here because he has Jazz DNA. They tested him, and he's a 89% match.

There are a few other reasons.
He can rebound.
Body.
Cheap.
Why not.
Body.
Summer League.

It's mostly the DNA thing though.

Well it could very easily massively affect our playoff seeding and our path to a chip. The top 5 or 6 teams even are probably going to be decided by a 5 or 6 win gap. Rudy missing ten games and our ability to cover for his minutes in certain situations could be the difference between the second seed and the fifth in the west. The small things matter, most of all in championship contending years. This is a war of attrition and the one of the jobs of a general manager is to put in as many fail-safes and backups as possible.

I'm sorry (I wish it were not true) but Tony Bradley is not a playable backup to a backup.
Whether we have Bradley on the roster or not or as second or third String, if Rudy misses time we are massively in trouble. Lol

A comprehensive list of backup centers that TB is keeping us from signing at min contract who could help us win a ring:

Exit, stage right.

From what I sid see he was hustling his but off, it didnt always look pretty but if you are a young player trying to make it in the league you gotta bust your *** and he did appear to do that.
