Ersan Ilyasova to sign with Jazz per Jordan Schultz

If Quin won't even close games with Ingles over Bogey then there's no way in hell he's going to play Ilyasova over him.

Yeah but that situation is slightly different. Joe is getting the minutes he should be getting. So if you don't start Joe and close with him, you steal his minutes from the second team. Second unit success has maintained and extended leads with Gobert/ Conley/ Ingles/ Niang line-ups. I don't think we want to be playing Joe 26 minutes and then asking him to close. This would wear him down over the course of the season.

What were Quin's options?

I guess one could argue that Thabo and Joe were taking developmental minutes away from Niang and Royce (along with the likes of Burks and Exum). But I don't think they were exactly ready for prime time in 2017 and developed nicely in secondary roles.

Ed Davis was stealing minutes from Tony Bradley so there was no great option.

So there is no good precedent where you had a vet replacing very good established very good rotation players, as is the case today
Ed was basically the worst player in the NBA (no exaggeration) and Quin still played him.

There is no perfect comparison because normally when we make signings in season they are G league types. Here is the question to ask yourself... If Ersan had signed in the offseason do you think Quin would play him ahead of Niang? It would not be "crazy" to think Ersan would play over him.

And again... Quin may not replace Niang... but it is not "crazy" to think that. Words matter.

Lenny Wilkins, Dick Motta, Bill Russell and oh one Jerry Sloan have all said "I will play who is both hustling and producing. If it's a rookie so be it." The only one that doesn't have an NBA championship ring as a coach is Sloan and he played for Motta awhile.
Jerry also benched D-Will for Milt Palacio... so he may not be the beacon to look to here.

Few rookies produce.

Who are the really good coaches that don't have "reverence for vets"?
Many do and Quin is pretty conventional there... Nick Nurse gives zero ***** and will play whoever in whatever scheme he has to.

Again... not crazy to think that if all things are close to equal that Quin or another coach will play a vet.

I'd almost argue that we have been playing Joe too many minutes, understadible with Conley going down. We need peak Joe for the playoffs. Fortunately, the schedule lightens up, and we can probably fit in a little more Oni.

I mean, Quin jettisoned Green and gave his minutes to Niang.

And most everybody here bitched about it. . .

After staying with Green for a while... and they released Green rather than keeping him as injury insurance. They didn't want to throw him at the end of the bench... they brought in Tucker and Morgan for that... so now we bring in Ersan... to not play him?

I'm fine with the move... If I were Niang I'd be looking over my shoulder though.

Hopefully it will serve as some motivation. We desperately need 1 on 1 defense against the bigger wings, this is the main weakness we have, so maybe this will spark a few of our guys to toughen up a bit and do the dirty work, I don't know.

I just really wish we had Jerami Grant. We would be a lock

Both Royce and Niang ought to be swallowing hard right now. Compare out new player's stats last year with the Bucks with theirs currently and it isn't a fair fight if the new guy is not totally out of shape.

Multiple people acting like the Jazz are gonna sign a guy who hasn't worked out or done drills for four months. He's been working out as I'm sure most guys who want to get signed are.

When in the last 5-6 years did you have an established successful rotation where someone more experienced has disrupted the rotation?

Which "less proven players" in the rotation are getting their minutes cut, in your opinion? What is the new rotation?

He'll take garbage time minutes from Morgan, Brantley and Niang

He'll get minutes when Favors/ Niang/ Gobert/ Bogey/ Ingles are injured/ resting/ COVID/ unavailable. Jazz have been very lucky to have few absences.

If he's in the "non-absence" rotation I would be surprised.

He's an insurance policy because our 10-15 bench is very inexperienced and you want to be able to plug in a vet in the playoff race and playoffs
This is precisely where I’m at.

Jerry needed to see the undentable warrior in your soul. If he didn’t see it (e.g. Koufos), then you didn’t have his trust, and so you would get doghoused.

it’s rare for a rookie to show you something like that.

I'm old enough to remember Jerry giving Shandon Anderson a lot of Jeff Hornacek's minutes. . .in the playoffs even.
Your point is good but Shandon took minutes from Chris Morris... not from Jeff.

None of these Sloan examples were Sloan trusting a rookie in place of an established vet realistically. And it was what, 2 over a 20+ year career? Not like that makes much of a trend. Sloan just wasn't prone to put rookies ahead of vets in most scenarios.
