Georges Niang is a Good Defensive Player?

Niang is now a good team defender who fits our defensive scheme perfectly with his minivan body. He is bulkier than most players in his position which allows him to stonewall those guys when he gets up close. His one major weakness on D is his lateral speed but the presence of Rudy simply allows him to close in on his opponent without the worry of getting blown by. It's almost if he is made perfectly for our funneling to the big system. He may get a bigger offer from somewhere else in the summer, but it'd be smart for him to stay.
His lateral quickness has been great. He packs length to be disruptive but usually is in the right spot and keeps his guy in front... sometimes they just shoot over him... it’s kind of like Neto but to a much lesser extreme.

The last month or so I am more confident in Niang when he’s on the floor than I am with Bojan.

The issue with defense isn’t with Niang... it’s that we don’t have any disruptive guys on the perimeter. That’s not his job but we need to mix a guy that can do that in the rotation imo.

I’m proud to be the only consistent camper on Niang Island. Some of you have come back and spoiled my view.
I helped develop the island but panic sold many of my prime properties... damn these paper hands.

It really isn't his lateral quickness that kept his guys in front though. It's really Rudy who simply cut off the driving lane behind that gives the opponents a hard time. That's called the Gobert effect and it makes his teammates at least 30% more effective on the perimeter defensively than they were in an open court environment.

But like you said, if the opponents were to neutralize Rudy and forced him out of his position, we become really vulnerable simply due to the lack of pure perimeter defenders.

Or instead of driving to the lane to challenge rudy, guys like Paul, Curry and Harden who just beat you off the dribble and shoot over you that's also where you need perimeter defenders to make life a bit difficult for them.

Nah, it/s the lateral quickness. Of course we arent asking Niang to guard stars, but he's the one keeping people in front. Gobert doesnt do that. Plenty of Jazz defenders have been blown by with Gobert on the court.

and how many of those blow-bys with rudy on the court resulted in points?

if one is to make a video called "georges niang defensive lowlights" similar to that of "matt thomas defensive lowlights" you will see plenty of blow-bys and may think of Niang as the worst defender in the world but jazzfans rarely take notice because these blow-bys are by design and actually help the jazz.

More often than not those blow-bys will result in either a miss shot or a TO simply cuz the opponent really has nowhere to go after running into the brick wall called the Stifle Tower.

Driving purely one on one without anyone covering behind the man guarding you vs. driving with one has a huge mental impact on the ballhandler. Either drive with plenty of caution/control which slow you down(hence Niang "the perimeter stopper"), or drive with full speed to force a breakthrough which then result in a TO or miss shot when helped by Rudy.

So it's basically "pick your poison" type of deal for the opponent and the whole premise of the jazz "funneling to the big" scheme.

In a way we want those blow-bys because it plays to our strength in Rudy. What we don't want to see is those long shots off the dribble/high pick n roll that force Rudy to guard out onto the perimeter.

Yeah, you arent giving Niang nearly enough credit. Getting blown by isnt funneling to the big.

And like I said, the defense has held up with Niang/Favors. as well.

credit definitely goes to Niang and he does a great job when he gets to close up on his opponents, which is not something i can say about bojan. all i'm saying is that he fits really well in our defensive scheme and life may become a bit more difficult if he is to go to a new team that plays with more pace and open space. so it'd be smart for him to stay.

Niang lovers are hilarious and will make excuses come playoff time. He will get exposed there, and lets pull up this thread again.

I never understood the Niang hate. I’ve been ambivalent, but his development has flown under the radar. Very well could be the next Royce to some degree. If Oni develops too, that solves so many problems.

It’s very clear George’s went to the “Joe Ingles School of Defense for the Vertically Challenged” last summer.

His lateral movement is very good. He doesn’t get blown by... those saying he does aren’t paying attention. His issues come because he’s not long and isnt disruptive. He has been guarding his yard and makes the right rotations and that goes a long way. Just like Joe he won’t be winning any foot races but they move side to side well.... George’s just doesn’t have Joe’s length so he doesn’t make a lot of plays on the ball.

Everyone pay better attention and stop being dumb please.

Niang and Ingles have the same wingspan. I think NIang might be an inch shorter in height.

Well then he's just not as disruptive with his length. Ingles also generally guards 2s and 3s and Niang is more of a PF. Positions are more murky than they used to be so he may be guarding guys that are functionally wings though.

He had a slow start shooting but the defense has been solid all year. In Feb he was 43% from 3... March he is currently 43%... if he's hitting his shots like this then his defense has improved to a point where he will absolutely be a net positive on the court.

It would be nice to get some athleticism and a defensive disruptor on the court but since we don't really have that guy then just roll with Niang.

Replacing Bogey with Niang seems like a great way to shed some salary while not losing much. Makes us better on defense too.

I think this is where it is heading... Though if Bogey keeps playing like **** there will not be a very robust trade market for him. He's making me nervous. The mental stuff combined with the wrist has me a little shook.

Im not there yet, not even close.

Niang is playing 14 mpg primarily against backups. It's a big change to double the minutes and start guarding the starting 3/4's of the NBA.

But of course, Royce would replace Bogey in the starting lineup, not Niang. I guess Niang would boost up to more like 20 mpg if we traded Bogey without getting a rotation player back.
