Rudy’s value

If we are going to talk about Dons value, what is Rudy’s value? Defensive centers with no offensive game are a dime a dozen. Of course not on Goberts level. But does a half decent defensive center with a better offensive game make us a better team? Ayton for example?

Ayton vs Rudy is interesting.
Per 36 Rudy gobert: 17 points, 16 rebounds, 3 blocks. 68% from the field. 62% from the line.
DeAndre Ayton: 17 points, 12 rebounds, 1.5 blocks. 63% from the field. 77% from the line.

I think we all agree that gobert is the better defender. (probably by quite a decent margin)
We also probably all agree that Ayton is the better offensive player. Though looking at it statistically he doesn't really do any more than Rudy on offense with those better offensive skills.

Even in the playoffs this year their numbers were very similar and Rudy might even come out on top statistically in that comparison (I would need more time and a calculator to really do this comparison but just eyeballing their playoff stats this season and ballparking them they are pretty close.)

What I noticed is that when Ayton played against the clippers, the clippers couldn't play small ball. He punished them too much down low and they schemed differently to not get beat by small ball.

So, I think that the differences between Ayton and Gobert that got the suns past the clippers are AGILITY and a POST GAME.

I think that Jarrett Allen gives you 90% of what Gobert does defensively while also getting you 120% more in agility and post game. All at a rumored $100 million deal (half the price). Gobert for Allen S&T and Nance would make me happy.

The only other solution is that Gobert needs to improve in those categories. I won't put that past him.

Oh, yeah, and Snyder needs a better small ball scheme. I am not convinced he has that.

I think it's just Chris Paul.

You’re a ****ing idiot.

The jazz, at least in the last 2 games didn’t play their offense. All they did was play through Mitchell, and Gobert had little to no opportunities to get the ball from the pick’n roll ball handler. Rudy could’ve torn that **** up but Mitchell had little to no interest in getting him the ball.

Always somebody else's fault when it comes to Rudy....

Chris Paul undoubtedly makes Ayton better, but his ability, offensive skills and shooting range is better than Rudy.

Rudy is definitely a better defender though. No doubt.

What? You can't say Rudy wouldn't play better if he played with Chris Paul. So I don't know what you are trying to say.

Anyways, Ayton is not significantly better at any aspect of their game. He is thicker which allows him to seal better, move people around better but that's just it. The main difference is that they had one of the best playmakers in the history of the game. It's really simple.

I really hate to break it to you guys but the rest of the league doesn’t value Rudy nearly as much as Jazz fans do. The minimal return we’d get back for him isn’t worth dealing him. His contract is terrible but he means more to our team than we’d get back for him from anyone else.

The type of deal we’d be looking at is something from Sacramento like our choice of Harrison Barnes or Buddy Hield plus pick 9 in the draft.

That is a rebuilding move and doesn’t help us win more next year.

The Clippers also did a good job of forcing switches that pulled Rudy out of the paint.

And I swear teammates don't call switches for Rudy a lot of the time. Conley wasn't part of the defensive problems when he was healthy; Mitchell definitely needs to up his defensive game; I'd be all for having him be our PG so he has an easier time defending; then we can play a better defender at SG and these switches won't burn Rudy.

When he makes $41, $43 and $46 when he is 31, 32 and 33, we might wish we would have taken a deal in 2021.

As it stands though, I think Charlotte can and would be willing to make us a very compelling offer if they strike out in free agency.

If we trade Rudy, we take a step back for playoff seed without a doubt. Depending on what we get back, playoff contention probably stays about the same.

My worry is that we keep him, we disappoint again next season, we don't have much flexibility and Rudy's contract becomes an absolute anchor killing all chances for growth.

I don't want to trade Rudy, but if Conley leaves, it has to be considered.
