What's new

I'm choosing to be optimistic about Miye Oni

If the remainder of Onis contract wasn’t guaranteed, why did the trade him (and send a pick) instead of just waive him? Wouldn’t waiving him not cost them anything?

It means we’re off the hook for the additional tax on the salary we already paid him. At least I think. Or maybe just the cash we got back offsetting that.

In any case, it’s not a financial move. Ryan Smith doesn’t make moves because finances. We just really like Oni and wanted him to have a chance to shine elsewhere, so we did him a solid. And we gave OKC a pick because we were doing them a solid for helping us do Oni a solid. Oni should get some good playing time in OKC… err… uh… yeah, we did this for Oni. Not to save money.

It would have cost a lot in the luxury tax as OKC is paying the guaranteed part of the salary.
