And Ron Boone did some of that but it amplified Hot Rod. I think Boone is really smart dude and I like that Locke has opened him up a bit more. Boone is like a perfect Pippen. Thurl doesn't do a lot for me but I think he could have some room to run with someone smart like Holly. I am not sure either will carry a broadcast as the #1 but I'd give it a shot.

I like what Holly is doing. She's high efficiency right now... I need her to expand her usage. I think she's a great talent and can't believe how hard she works... Boler needs a nap after watching her.

With Boler I don't cringe anymore... I'm numb to how little he understands. I try to play a game with it... like how many elbow jumpers can he call a three.... how many times can he say "looks good" as a shot goes up and it doesn't go on. He goes to flame on way too much but its kinda funny when JC is 1/8 and he throws out a flame on.
haha yes flame on when he's 1/9. Love it.

One of the head-scratchers for me is when Boler calls a shot a "quick-hitter." From what I can tell, this refers to a catch-and-shoot 3-pointer, or an off-the-dribble 3 pointer, or another random shot.

I don't dislike Thurl. But at least Harpring could push back on Boler and his bolerisms a little bit. Thurl has been asked to just capitulate and play things 1000% non-confrontationally or -teasingly.
Which is why he pairs well with Locke. Well, sort of, I guess I’m mostly speaking to how frantic Locke is and how that can understandably grate on people. Thurl is the most relaxing presence I’ve ever heard on a broadcast which isn’t always advantageous.

She's only there half the time, she has other jobs to work, lol. And I feel like she just has stats written down to blurt out every once in awhile, she doesn't really bring anything to the broadcast team.
Don't forget her encyclopedic knowledge of every players wonderful strengths, how much they worked in college to get where they are, and how great they all are...uh, except Jazz players of course. But man, does she LOVE LOVE LOVE Ja Morant. And, uh, anyone else that worked hard to get good at basketball, except Jazz players of course.

I think it is just how Thurl is. Harp added more that wasn't just a rose colored Jazz perspective.

might be true about Thurl. Still, as a former player, I can't help but think he must regard some of the things Boler says as just plain ridiculous. In other words, Thurl must know much better than any of us at JFC just how little Boler knows about basketball

The whole flame on thing has gotten really old this season. Like, JC is shooting 37% and 29% from 3 yet Boler and Thurl use it EVERY SINGLE GAME, even when he's ice cold. Maybe if they used it for Donovan or Bogey it wouldn't get on my nerves so much but it just doesn't fit JC at all.

This is an example of what made Hot Rod so great. He had no issues calling it out when someone was stinking it up. I remember one game we were having problems rebounding the ball and he was getting frustrated (listening to the radio broadcast....crap I'm old). Malone then pulled down an important rebound and Hot Rod was like "the mailman finally got a rebound" and I swear he had to stifle a swear-word at the end. Part of what made him the best announcer ever.

Hot Rod spoiled us. He was just so unbelievably good.

It made sense last year, but yeah, not this year. If a player comes in and clanks 3 3pt shots and then makes a floater you shouldn't say "flame on!"

But Thurl also knows that making a layup in the last few minutes of a close games doesn't mean Donny is a superstar but he falls all over himself making a big deal of it. And when Jazz players including Donny mess up he completely dodges being realistic. Harp was better.

I am OK with Holly but every other move that has been made with the Jazz broadcasts this year are a downgrade. Alema and Smith are the worst combo we have ever had on TV. Thurl was a lot better with Alema and Harp was better doing the color.

I really like Mike Smith. He knows his ****.

My take is that we have never had anyone who liked to hear himself talk as much as Smith does. For years I have been a defender of our broadcasters (mostly because I travel a lot and hear a lot of broadcast teams) but recent changes have changed my position. KK and Harp were better and Thurl was way better as a balance to Alema. It is going to get worse. We are going to black and white uni's

I don't personally don't like a three-person broadcast team. I think Holly is better with two people instead of three. I feel like three people broadcast teams seem like they are always waiting for their turn to talk. My preference is Boler and Thurl because they don't seem as irritating and I don't notice them as much and can focus on the game. Although If I hear Boler yell "Ocho" one more time...I'm gonna lose it.
