What's new

Game Thread Apr 05, 2022 07:00PM MT: Jazz vs. Grizzlies

A few takeaways that I think are pretty obvious:

1. Closing with House. He’s not gun shy on shooting when he has to and his defense is better.

2. Juancho over Gay. Just his energy and hustle really stands out when he’s in the game. I don’t care if he was our big signing. The guy that was a throw-in from our salary dump is who we need to roll with.

3. Limit Don handling the ball down the stretch. By limit it, I mean don’t let him dominate it.

If Quin can do the above (tall order), we may salvage something. Maybe.

House is a better player than Royce. No question in my mind.
He plays with such energy and force… he also does not hesitate on the shots he’s supposed to shoot… was glad Quin made the switch. He has a few dumb mistakes but overall I don’t think it’s close.

I had visions of a whole new style of basketball being played when I watched House play. This guy plays in FFW.

I think tonight was Gays last shot. We tried Gay… we tried so hard to make Gay work but it just ain’t working. Back to back so Juan will be fresh tomorrow… guessing we rest like everyone.

House should play equal minutes to Royce or more. If Royce can’t bring the energy cuz he’s too tired then a few extra minutes of rest should help.

We need to run our ****ing offense in crunch time… don’t let Don try to hit home runs. If that means throwing it to Bogey a few possessions then I guess we try it…

I still think Royce is better than House overall, but something weird is up with Royce.

Remember to start the year Royce would throw down some pretty monstrous dunks? That has happened in a long time.
Royce seems so close to Don that he¡s probably in the same twilight mental zone.
The fact is he's got no place ahead of House right now.

I Couldn’t believe he finished that dunk tonight. That stretch in the first half with him and JC was electric.

Also Hassan was next level for a few minutes there…good Hassan is so fun.

Hallelujah the cult needs a twist

So good feelings aside, Don and Rudy didn't share a lot of minutes tonight. Seemed like they were having their minutes staggered to avoid having them both on the floor. Obviously in OT they both played, but that wasn't the story during regulation.

What does Royce do better than House?

And why isn’t Juancho getting any burn? What does Gay do better than Juancho? Especially in a game where Jackson is tearing us a new one? Why not try and match length with length?
I haven't watched many games lately, I did watch tonight. House blew my ****ing mind. Like I was reconceptualizing what basketball could be after a couple of his more impressive plays. I was imagining basketball played in FFW mode. This guy seemed like he could do things in 1/4 the time it would take a normal human to do that thing.

I haven't watched many games lately, but that said, House has my eyebrows raised long past the time they should be. I'm intrigued.

That actually isn't unusual at all. Quin always staggers their minutes so that one of them is on the court at all times. Rudy and Mike always play a lot of their minutes with the bench unit.

So the Don to Rudy pass stat is a little bit irrelevant since they don't play together much?

I watched games more regularly earlier in the season and I don't remember them having their on court time together being this limited.

Don wasn't great tonight, but he was playing with a lot of energy and effort. It helps set the tone when he does this. Every night isn't going to be a highlight reel, but you can always play hard.
I agree with that. Team was much better balance tonight. Don did not try to do all alone ( 8 assist for conley) and defense was correct. Real issue is on O Neal.

I also want to say that House and Hernangomez show how absolutely terrible the complementing roster construction has been the past couple years on filling specific needs. Ever since the Denver series, the only thing we did was pretend Murray went off because we didn’t have Favors, then we said the guy already on our roster in Oni was the answer. When we didn’t address issues, everyone pointed to how talented everyone was and mentioned how hard it is to find what we’re looking for or said guys floating out there just weren’t good enough or aren’t good for Quin’s system or something.

House wasn’t some shrewd find from them scouring the league. He was floating out there picking up 10-days. We didn’t make any move for him. We waited until we were absolutely COVID depleted to sign him to a COVID exemption. We didn’t lock him up because we wanted “flexibility.” When nothing came around, we finally committed.

Juancho wasn’t on a radar. We took a salary dump to clear $3M this year but had to swallow $5M next year of NAW’s deal. Juancho came back as salary balancing as essentially an expiring contract. If they could have not taken him in the deal, they wouldn’t have. But here he ends up fitting within the system and bringing some much needed energy and hustle and being active.

We have both of these guys by absolute fluke and definitely not by the FO being proactive. Imagine what we could have done if we were actually looking for the right people all along. Showing that you can completely luck into two guys off the scrap heap flies in the face of all the learned helplessness about “aw shucks, there’s just no way to get better.”
