Jazz and Knicks discussing Donovan Mitchell trade per Shams Charania and Tony Jones

Yeah, if the Knicks won’t throw up at least three unprotected picks (+ players, more protected picks and swaps) then they can **** all the way off. Best of luck trying to attract that first big star that’s likely in their 30’s and trying to make their last big payday in 2025.

I will revel in their suffering regardless of whether we own their picks or not.
 
I don't care what Donovan wants. I don't care what the Knicks want.

Danny Ange wants unprotected picks. I think he will get them. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that Dolan stepped in to make it happen.

All the rest, from the media and both fan bases, is just noise.
 
The great thing about Ainge is whatever haul of picks we're willing to settle for, Ainge is going to want more. We know that we need to suck and play young guys next year and for the next several. Ainge is going to ensure that happens.

There were certainly times on this board when, collectively, JazzFanz appeared to be smarter than the front office and significantly smarter than the coaching staff (ah, the Corbin days.) We don't have that issue any more. Ainge is like most JazzFanz posters - ruthlessly focused on the goal of a championship.

the starting point needs to be the Gobert trade (3 unprotected picks, 1 top 5 protected pick, a pick swap and a few interesting young players) and then hold out until they beat that. Engage with any team willing to look into it, but give NY the chance to “beat” any other offer on the table.

I think they’ll come around, but the longer this plays out - the more pressure on the Knicks to do something.

There were a lot of skeptics when he came onboard (myself included) but I always held out hope that we’d get this version of Danny Ainge. The ruthless cutthroat that wants to absolutely crush whoever is in his way.

Was hoping he could do what DL/JZ failed at, and build a contender around Gobert and Mitchell - but things were clearly too broken for that to be a possibility.

He was a good defender who shot a good percentage on a good volume from 3. That's rare for a rookie and then he followed up with an impressive SL.

Don't get me wrong, I am not saying he won't be good. But just how sure are we that he will be? Lets say... what's the chance he's somewhere in the Desmond Bane range? What's the chance he will be Terance Mann? Or will he be like Trent Forrest?

Jazz need a 6’7/6”8 wing that can get buckets at will. Mismanaging that position is one of DL’s biggest mistakes during his tenure. Which is surprising considering he was one of the guys that helped execute the trade for San Antonio that got them Kawhi Leonard. He poured way too many resources into PG and C, while not putting nearly enough investment into the wing position.

Thankfully, that doesn’t seem to be as much of an issue for Danny Ainge.
 
Donovan is gonna go to the Knicks. All that matters now are the fine tuned details -

- What 5 picks?

and

- What players? My guess is Fournier, Grimes, Reddish and McBride.

This leaves NYK 4 picks to try to get another star in 24 - NYK 25, NYK 27, NYK 31, MKE 25 + swaps. (they might even include whoever they draft in 24 in the deal after the draft(like we got Kessler).

The awkward thing is... this is starting to become ridiculous for us with the number of picks in the 2023 draft. This would be 7 1st rounders if they all convert. But reality is - a lot of those won't (DAL converts, DET - probably not, WAS probably not)...

We still get one premier assett in an unprotected 29 NYK pick and we get two valuable swaps in case NYK collapses after Don's contract is up.

This is a terrible deal for us.

Still, kinda feels like it happening during a lull in the off-season feels right. Once this domino falls, there’s going to be a few more that come down as well.
