Beverley to Lakers for THT and Stanley Johnson

It is certainly wishful thinking, but that doesn't mean it's not a thing also.
The fans and the LA media are saying that the Indiana deal is the number one desired deal and the 2nd pick is being haggled over. Utah's proposed deal for Westbrick is second most desired. I am sure we talked alot with the Lakers and made the calculation to move Bev; maybe it helps, maybe it hurts who knows.

Is it more believable that both teams wanted this trade as it is, or is it more believable that the Jazz gave this deal to the Lakers to get a pinkie swear that they will delay a deal with IND.....I know what I think lol. Both teams wanted this THT-Bev deal independent of what happens with WB. That's why it's already done. I didn't think the Jazz got great value out of Beverley, but it's not like this is the a trade that should alarm any suspicions. Many people are happy with here, and I get it. There's a ton of wink wink stuff in the NBA, but there's no reason for it here and the more simple explanation that both teams just wanted this trade for what it was is far more plausible.
Oh its definitely more plausible and likely... I said as much. Just because there is a plausible explanation doesn't mean anything other than that is lol worthy. I think there is plenty of stuff to raise an eyebrow about here.

We can ignore everything else about this and simply ask about the timing... why now? Why in the middle of huge trade conversations would you take anything you might use off the table? Why for a middling trade return that many think was light?

I am likely wrong... but I don't think its lol wrong. I think its one unlikely but reasonable explanation.

I don't get the down payment argument. AT ALL! I think it's wishful thinking. The most probable explanation is - the Jazz just like THT more than most here and like to take a flyer on him.
That is the most reasonable explanation... doesn't mean others aren't potentially valid. Its like last year when I told some folks here the NAW trade was a money move and that was the motivation... and handful of folks laughed and pointed to media types saying he'd be in the rotation immediately and that is why they did the deal.

THT has been on the block for eternity... why did we do a deal for him now? Were we worried another team was going to scoop him up? What if Bev's salary could be used in the Donovan deal... why take anything off the table?

No because we are worried that he would be dealt in a Russ trade to Indiana.

Yes, THT has been on the block, but the KD news means they are more willing to move on with a Russ trade, which means they could be trading multiple players. Jazz secured THT.

THat is a much more reasonable explanation than a "down payment".

Sorry, I can't read through all the arguing about who is right and who is wrong with their prognostications. My only question is, and I hope someone can tell me in a succinct manner - why would we ever want Russell Westbrook?

We don't want Westbrook. We want the draft picks that come with him.

Oh my bad... they had planned to do the Russ deal with Indiana which is their preferred deal right? And THT was going to Indiana because they want him right? But LA decided to endanger their preferred deal by dealing THT to us now.

To make the Indiana deal less appealing. Not my argument just throwing it out there.

4th dimensional chess move. Lol
Why would he want to make that deal less appealing? Is it so he could step in and do the deal himself?

Why now? What kind of question is that haha. Both teams wanted the deal that happened. Some people think it's light, some people think we got a good deal. That always happens. There are many deals that I don't think are equal.

The idea that the Jazz made a trade now to stall an IND trade as an IOU is pretty funny to me. I know we desperately want that WB deal. But no outsider would think that the Jazz made that trade as a down payment.

Couple other things... Rob Perez kinda tied it together...

Bev knew this deal was going down by 8/14... tie it in with Bev tweeting about KD holding everything up.

Works against my downpayment theory I think. So the timing may be irrelevant as we somewhat agreed to a deal a while ago...

Its a relevant question haha lolz lmao.... teams regularly wait to do business until other deals are done. We are kind of in the middle of a big deal right now... so its fair to say why not wait.

The other obvious answer is that the second deal doesn't exist, meaning LAL is taking the IND or not dealing with UTA at all. If your answer to why it hasn't happened yet is because UTA did this to stall a IND trade, that is just wishful thinking.

THT would be a possible salary filler or addition to any Russ trade.

The Jazz got the guy they seemed to want and made sure he didnt get dealt elsewhere.

Yes, this is much more plausible than a "down payment".
