Really good article, but the standout part to me was the fact that Finnish men have to serve a 6 to 12 month stint of military service.

Kind of crazy. Would he just pause his contract? Will he wait until the end of his current contract? Can he do it next year when the Jazz try to tank again?

They talked about this during some of the Cavs games this last year. Sounds like the minimum service is just shy of 6 months. Not sure if it can be bifurcated.

Evidently for professional athletes they go to a military sports school to train others and continue their training as well. They talked like he was potentially going to do it earlier this year. It sounds like they may waive the requirement as well, but it was unclear if that would happen. If he gets U.S. dual citizenship he does not have to serve.

It sounds like from a Finish article from a year ago he applied to the sports military school thing and also applied for deferment. He would have had to be there in April right after this season unless he got his deferment. That deferment might have to be applied for every year until its denied. If not it would be for 6 months starting in April whatever year that happens. Which means he would rejoin the team in November of that year. That doesnt seem like a big deal. He would likely miss training camp, pre-season, and about 10-15 games to start the year.

Also just read an article that says other NHL Finland guys have split up their time across multiple years. So he can just do 3 months 1 year and 3 the next.
