2023 NBA Draft Megathread

For everyone else, playing with/against bad competition is seen as an excuse :p
Leagues have to factor into the equation a little. With Bilal you can see the NBA skills and the floor doesn't look like a Socal freeway at rush hour. I think with college basketball the spacing is so uniquely ****** that you have to consider it with everyone.

From the highlights he is doing a lot of things... points of cuts, drives, pullups, spot ups, crashing the glass. I don't have a ton of concern about the league there.

It does....I just think people are piling on the excuses a little too heavy. Whether it's college, G-League, OTE, Australia, anywhere else....it's not exactly a catch all excuse for everything lol. But I get it, it's hard to compare across competition.

And it's a real question mark for Coulibaly as well, but I feel comfortable enough with his tools to rank him very high. Not sure there is another wing with a better defensive profile. I suppose you could throw the Thompson twins in the conversation, but Bilal is a year and half younger and has +5 wingspan on them. I think his defensive tools are special. The offense may be a little raw, but he's shown the foundation as a slasher and his shot doesn't look bad. I'm interested to see how the rest of the season goes for him as he is pretty much playing with Wemby and the senior team exclusively now.

My strategy. If the Jazz can't get into the top 8 I would trade back and focus on high upside projects with the only exception being Sensabraugh. Heck, I would spend a future pick to get more projects from the optimal position. Why would I want potentially 4 picks? I want a Gianni's scenario to happen AND I want it to happen this year. I don't want to waste a year of Lauri, Kessler, and Abaji down the line. Give me projects that I can make flourish in two years

It would be cheaper than trading for a super star. Lean into coach Hardy's ability to coach up his players. If you hit on one player then you are top 4 competitive. If you hit on two then you are dynasty with all young players.

And my math based logic follows. If the average value of the draft is 7 picks higher compared to other drafts and you own 2 consecutive picks then an optimal position follows closely to where you control the two picks. It is the equivalent to adding 2 picks to the overall value because you control who is available. If the Jazz have picks 12, 13 then I would want pick 14 as well. And I would trade the '25 Cleveland pick and/or the '25 Utah pick to get that pick (the 14th minus 7 minus 2 would be similar to the 5th pick in an average draft and the Cleveland pick and the Utah is likely in the 20's).

Heck I would do everything to get 4 picks together in the sweet spot of the draft. The stars that develop come from somewhere. Why not take the biggest bite possible out of the deepest draft?

What the....

You don't want to waste a year of our core in the future, so you'd waste two/three years in the present to develop project players in hopes that ones/two take off?

I don't even think we'll make all 3 of the picks that we currently own and I am 100% confident that we're not going to trade future picks for more picks this year. I think one project player MAYBE two is fine but 4 is redundant because we probably wouldn't have the minutes to develop 4 rookies at the same time while also trying to remain competitive.

I think we will use the first 2 picks, but we trade the 3rd for a lottery protected pick next year.

Just depends on how the lotto shakes out and how the board falls on draft night. Wouldn't be surprised to see us move one of our lottery picks for a lighty protected pick in '24 since we might not have a pick

Just a reminder that Brice Sensabaugh is a 19 year-old, 6'6", 230-lb wing with 52/41/83 shooting splits. He should be a bonafide floor spacer and shouldn't be overlooked in the "Who's the best shooter in the draft?" discussion. He's also got potential to improve his strength and athleticism, and he should be able to get to the rim better in the NBA.

If the Jazz are drafting mid-first, he ought to be on people's short list.

Yes it is crazy and a little backwards. But to fill out the roster with 9 quality players this is how I would do it. I would want the team to do a serious run in the playoffs three years from now. The maximum number of young players who only need a year or two of help (and the team would have capacity for) from a loaded draft is what I would want.
