Roster Building From Here - FA and Summer of 2023

Wow!!

Isn’t it kinda an unwritten rule that when trading for a star it’s for other pieces and not your star?

Just curious. Would you trade Lauri and other young players not named Kessler and 3 picks for Luka? Two of the picks being future jazz picks and only one from cle or min?
#1 Lauri hater, pretty consistently.

Saw some "news" that Okoro would be shopped by Cavs. I mean I'm not a huge fan but if the price was right he could be a guy due for a jump up. Still only 22. His numbers aren't great but he's making little improvements each year. Pretty good second draft candidate if you ask me. Maybe KO for Okoro/filler or something along those lines?

IT would take more that KO and filler. Okoro is a legitimately good defender and at least OKish at shooting completely wide open shots on offense.

It was Amico Hoops so not super credible anyway. I think they might sell low on Okoro though... they will feel the pressure to improve and are low on trade assets. I wouldn't likely give much more as I am not particularly hopeful on him but would be a nice flier.

I guess they are going to want someone who can shoot? I'm not sure what kind of player Okoro can get you back. I dont think KO makes a lot of sense for them. Maybe you can do something like Fontecchio and the 28th pick (seems unlikely since Simone didnt really establish himself as a legitimate NBA rotation player)? Maybe KO/28th pick, but I just dont think another big is what they need even if he offers some nice stuff they dont have. Can something be done with a JC S&T?

I think the Cavs kind of ****ed up not playing Okoro more in the PO. I know he was kind of tanking their offense, but they also had great defensive numbers with him on the court. Think they should have just rolled with him and hope he hit some of the wide open shots they were giving him.

Keeping Lauri is a must. Luka and Lari's games would complement each other unbelievably well.

I don't care who we trade for, I'm not giving up Lauri under any circumstances. We need to be trying to add another star or two to go with Lauri, not swapping Lauri for another star. We have plenty of assets to trade without having to give up Lauri in any deals.

KO can be their Love/Lauri replacement. IDK... what they honestly need is a better version of what Okoro is. Tough to get when you are trading him.

I'm not super excited about Okoro so it would have to be a low-ish price... and they might do much better than what I'd offer. Just thought it was an interesting name for us, but may not be a good natural trade fit. We've done a lot of deals with them so that also kinda crossed my mind.

I mean, I would trade Lauri for Giannis, but that might be about it.

I'm not going to pretend to know a lot about Okoro but I presume he must be one hell of a defender? His numbers are worse than Royce. Way worse.

He's a good defender... He's 22 and is kind of the afterthought of their core. Its hoping he has a big leap up with a new team and hoping things kinda click for him. Again.. its not one I'm trading a whole lot for... but if you are looking for the next guy to "pop" like Lauri... then he is a guy I'd put on the list. Worst case he's a generic 3 and D wing... you will just wish the 3 was a bit better. Its a buy low type of thing so I wouldn't put in the Philly pick.

I thought a few posts back you said to do whatever it takes to get Luka.
I agree though, I don't do whatever it takes if it takes Lauri.

I meant do whatever it takes in terms of draft picks. I think the picks would likely be the centerpiece of a trade package, with some young talent being included as well.

I think 7-8 unprotected first round picks would be enough… if he was available. Maybe it takes more thought if it’s just picks. I would be pretty hesitant to make any of the superstar trades tbh. They generally don’t get moved unless they have 2 years or less left on their deals. It’s a lot of draft capital/risk on a short window. I think the master plan is to find a deal that takes like 3-4 picks at some point… if the Cavs or wolves start to suck or lose key pieces those picks start to get mighty juicey and you might get a bump up in value there.

I think some parity would be a good thing for the league.
It could be. There are a lot of moving parts… they may not like the parity when there is an Utah Indiana finals match.

Overall I think it would fun to have more continuity on rosters if markets are able to keep some of their own stars… don’t love when the teams get stacked and there are only a few teams that matter.

Thats the thing though. Luka has 4 years left at a pretty reasonable price too.
