Who Was Worse: Rookie Cody or Rookie Dante?

rookies play better when their teammates have some idea of how to play basketball. also i have noticed that this coaching staff have players focus on only one aspect of their game at a time, so it isn't strange that he is one sided right now and struggling. his summer league looked really good, probably because he was able to show his whole deck. again, only a few games in, and a young rookie, i will look forward to his growth.

Almost all rookies struggle mightily with the efficiency of their jump shots and drives to the baskets in their very first games. That is absolutely expected and a normal part of their transition to the NBA. What's important is to see how fast they process the game situations. Are they in the right spots? Do they get quality shots? Are they goof on defense? Can they react quickly to the broken play and snag rebounds or deflections? Can they quickly see their open teammates and pass them the ball?

And Cody is very good in all of that (Flip too, btw). The shooting will come and the percentages will improve. What's important is that both of our rookies look like smart, composed players with good physical tools. They will be good.

Do they get quality shots?

Teams give you "quality shots" if they know you can't hit anything. In the NBA, you're open for a reason.

Right now, defenses don't give a crap about Cody and he STILL sucks.

The shooting will come and the percentages will improve.

The first 5 games of Donovan Mitchell: 13 - 52 (25%) overall, 3 - 18 (17%) on 3-pointers.
The first 6 games of Colin Sexton: 23 - 54 (43%) overall, 0 - 5 (0%) on 3-pointers.
The first 6 NBA games of Joe Ingles (he was 27, btw): 2 - 10 (20%) overall, 0 - 7 (0%) on 3-pointers.

I dont think Cody is a shooter at all at this point in his development at least. His College shooting% came on a very low volume and according to a lot of Colorado fans he didnt take any jumpers if someone was even close to contesting them... so he was really sugarcoating his percentages.

Going deeper into his earlier stats he shot 25% or worse from 3 in FIBA (U19), EYBL and Adidas games, which kinda matches more to what we have seen from him. That is also much larger volume sample (around 100 combined attempts) vs his College volume (41 attempts).

The shot doesnt look ugly though, and he did say before the draft that he is working hard on it... so maybe its one of those cases where he decided to learn proper technique late and he isnt comfortable with it yet.

I haven't done any video comparison, but it feels like his shot was super slow, but looked pretty good and now it is sped up a little and looks off.

He's going to need a lot of work to get a consistent, quick enough release, and good looking shot.

What? Cody does not look lost and out of place, other than a couple miscues with the 24 sec clock. He cuts well, spaces well, closes on shooters, and manages screens well.

He has the Dante thing where his shot just doesnt really lend itself to shooting off the dribble. He has to be completely set, and even then, he's flinging it up. Really think he needs to rework it to a fairly significant degree.

It's disappointing that he didn't come in to the league with a jumper that was more ready, but I also have some confidence he will figure it out. Him being able to get to the rim and finish in traffic is pretty conceivable once the natural body development happens (like you said). Since neither of those things are likely to happen this season we are going to have to be very patient and keep that perspective in mind, i.e. imagine what type of player he can become assuming those two things come around.

Uh well that's not what I was responding to. I was responding to someone saying he looks lost and out of place.

And responding to your point, he made multiple drives into the lane this game that ended up as either buckets for him or other Jazz players. He's definitely playing passively, but I don't see someone who is "useless" with the ball in their hands.
