The Department of Justice wants to stand in for President Trump in his ongoing appeal of a defamation case that could cost him tens of millions of dollars.

Lawyers for the taxpayer-funded agency and Mr. Trump's personal attorneys said in a filing on April 11 that the Justice Department believes the federal Westfall Act shields Mr. Trump in the case, which has pitted him against the writer E. Jean Carroll.

A federal jury awarded Carroll $83.3 million in January 2024, after concluding that Mr. Trump made defamatory statements when denying that he sexually abused Carroll. That award came less than a year after a separate federal jury concluded Trump was liable for sexual abuse, and instructed him to pay her $5 million.

Mr. Trump has denied all of Carroll's allegations and appealed both cases.

The Justice Department asserts that Mr. Trump was acting in his official capacity as president when he made the allegedly defamatory statements about Carroll in 2019, and therefore the court is required to substitute the United States for Mr. Trump in the case. Under the Westfall Act, federal employees are entitled to absolute immunity from personal lawsuits for conduct occurring within the scope of their employment.

I was told the gun nuts in this country would prevent this. Growing up here in Utah, I was taught for years that slaughtered school children, shot up theaters, and bloody super markets was the price we paid for such “freedom.” As it turns out, the gun nuts were always on the side of authoritarians.

Can we finally ban the guns and join the rest of the industrialized countries with gun laws that make sense? What benefit do we get from letting any moron obtain an arsenal of guns?

But I don’t see how you’d see the two candidates and say, “Hell yeah, Gimmie the rapist who was impeached twice and has a man crush on Putin and ***** on golden toilets. This is exactly what our country needs.”

Endemic homelessness, preventable deaths from avoidable disease, mass incarcerations, a permanent underclass fighting to survive on the fringe.

Have you been to the Vatican? Have you seen the money that gets spent on Jesus? Trump is the new messiah, a living, breathing, orange, raping Messiah. The poultry 83 million for a pesky bit of defamation and rape is a bargain.

I have more respect for those who are openly fascist, like that person, than the closeted ones who have nothing to say but "everything is fine guys, stop listening to the media", which is the majority of the so-called conservatives. At least they are honest about the fact they're the enemy of every American who believes in democracy and the rule of law.

I read it as more of an attack on the courts not cops. Judges and DAs cant be trusted!!! They are the enemy of the people!!!

The talking points will circulate, the talking heads will preach to the gathered masses yearning to hear the new testament of orange Jesus.

Its one thing to ignore the rule of law but its another and vastly more important thing to undermine the institution and concept of the rule of law.

As someone who has lived their life in Utah, it’s the religious colorblind moderate who’s ignorant of their own history that bugs me.

“Blacks should get over slavery. Now let’s dedicate the entire summer to talking about how our religion was persecuted unfairly, whitewash Joseph Smith, and pretend that we didn’t just occupy territory that wasn’t ours. We are so persecuted!” (Imagine if Mormon pioneers had been deported to El Salvador instead?)

“Jesus said a lot about humility, helping the poor, and the dangers of great wealth. So let’s have another lesson about paying tithing to the billion dollar church and how gays are ruining the planet.”

“Talking about Trump’s immorality makes me feel icky. So I’m gonna just pretend that abortion is the most important issue and use that as a heat shield for excusing that which I’d never excuse if they had a D by their name.”

“Can’t we just move on from (insert whatever is the latest Trump scandal) meanwhile let’s dwell on Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky. I just can’t vote for a Dem cuz of that (even though we have 30+ years now of republicans raping women and children, including the guy we just voted for 3 times).”

“I’m a self-sufficient conservative who cares about fiscal things. When I was on the GI bill, on food stamps, and enrolled in Medicaid, no one helped me. Now that I’ve made a career at Hill Air Force Base and am ready to retire with social security, I just think cuts need to be made to the welfare queens out there.”

“All lives matter.” (While never giving a **** about anyone else)

I've been seeing another one that's quickly becoming a favorite of mine. "I'm sick of liberals saying white people are racists for things my ancestors did that I had nothing to do with. That's why I'm voting for Trump".
