Game Thread NBA Draft Lottery - May 12, 2025

Added to Calendar: 05-12-25

Sure….What I meant to communicate is that that the decision to tank vs half tank isn’t the one which should be reconsidered. Even with this brutal result, I am 100% sure I’m happier now than if we half and half tank (if you don’t consider the fact that dumb luck would have resulted in us getting a top 2 pick). The real decision was made when we dumped Gobert and Mitchell. Once that decision was made, we now exist in a different world where this 14% chance is the best hope we have and this should have been considered when we dumped Mitchell/Gobert.

What I’m saying is that the only thing to be reconsidered is dumping Mitchell/Gobert. The decision to tank after they had already been traded is a no brainer. But we should not have looked at the tanking route as so roses when we had those two and it did not take hindsight to recognize that. All it took was the acknowledgment of simple probability to know that this was the most likely outcome.
That’s the decision I was referring to, not the decision to tank. The decision to tank was the best way we could play our hand. Trading away both guys wasn’t necessarily the best way we could have played that hand. That’s the part that I don’t think needs “revisiting” with the benefit of hindsight. It was clear with a modicum of foresight.

I guess what I’m saying is that I don’t question the decision to tank AFTER we had already traded Rudy/Don. The only thing I’m really thinking is “too late”. But this reality that we’re feeling right now should have been considered before trading Rudy/Don. No hindsight required to look at percentages we already knew.

Absolutely. That’s why I say emotion (the way the previous three years of postseasons had gone) clouded the judgement on being able to adequately appraise that.

Twitter is ablaze with accusations that tonight's lottery was rigged. I think everyone can admit that, if nothing else, the optics of this are completely awful: If Anthony Davis forces a trade to LA so he can play with Lebron, and New Orleans then gets the #1 draft pick to start over with, you can call that a magical coincidence. But if the same lightning strikes again with Dallas sending Luka Doncic to LA and receiving the #1 pick in the ensuing draft, now it's become a pattern. This is what people have caught onto.

The other thing worth mentioning is that earlier today, before the lottery, Giannis came out with some whacky and completely unnecessary statement about how he'd be willing to be traded to a state that didn't have state taxes (i.e., Texas or Florida). Brian Windhorst goes on-air and names the Spurs and Rockets as potential trade destinations for Giannis. Then a few hours later, the Spurs move up in the draft for the third year in a row, netting the #2 pick and a star prospect in Dylan Harper that the Spurs can package in a trade for a player like Giannis.

So Luka-to-LA gets smoothed over, and the table gets set for Milwaukee to reboot if they trade Giannis. It's just too poetic. Let's see if the Spurs make a move for a star to play next to Wemby, who is ready to win now.

I'm absolutely done supporting this clown show scripted farce known as the NBA. All the things done behind doors, are obviously sus. I wish you all well, it's been fun. Even twenty years from now, the Jazz will remain the same while the NBA will jump through hoops for teams that had already won championships after championships. That's the teams they value the most. It's a shame.

Wow. Some people are DEEP in their conspiracy theory rabbit holes. Not healthy. Anyway, three things:

1) The draft is not rigged (as if that needed saying).

2) The possibility of VJ Edgecombe, the only player with a legit superstar ceiling, somehow still being there at #5 is very, very unlikely… but even stranger things have happened in this league. GM’s mess up all the time.

3) Overall, this draft class will not live up to the hype. Flagg is a glorified jack-of-all-trades 3rd banana (with a 2nd banana ceiling), Ace and Tre are meh bench players in the league. When all is said and done, Harper and VJ will be the ones head and shoulders above everyone else.

Is this Tony's way of saying that he thinks the lottery was rigged? How did the NBA send a message if it wasn't rigged?

"If I were the Jazz, I would make my pick at 5, go get some vets in the offseason and be as competitive as possible next season League sent a real message tonight"

The Jazz played this season perfectly. They should tank all the way to the bottom again next year and take Chris Cenac, Nate Ament or Karim Lopez next year at #5.

Houston was a laughingstock and got into the top 3 four years in a row. San Antonio tanked and got Wemby, followed by Steph Castle. Tanking works. It's just this year that had a unique set of circumstances.

Here's Tony's tweet---

It's pathetic how the media is already saying the Jazz will have the number 1 pick next year because the AJ guy will be playing for BYU next season. FU POS league and media!! I'm sick of this. I will go to the vegas summer league one last time and give the NBA the effing bird and quit caring for the NBA. Everything is SUS, and I've had it.
If you go, please bring a sign that says "Adam Silver rigged dem balls" or "NBA = WWE" or Silver hates Utah and Utah hates you back...

Several of us said the same thing in the conspiracy post April 23rd.

It doesn't take a whole lot of imagination to recognize that the near NUCLEAR FALLOUT after Luka was traded would decimate the Dallas fan base. The Luka trade blew up the league.

Silver had to do something about losing a huge market overnight. It has happened before and it will happen again. Not saying they mess with every draft but they do play god on important #1 picks... no doubt about it at this point.

Boo this league. Boo Adam Silver.
