Much like Edey last year, I think there is a prospect who is being underrated due to preconceived notions we hold about how NBA players look.

With Edey it was he's too big/slow and a 4 year college player.

With Yang, it's also big/slow, but add in being Chinese and playing in the CBA.

He's a top 10 talent who ESPN currently has mocked going 42.

Draft Yang and have him backup Kessler. Gives the Jazz more playmaking, physicality, and size.

He will have to work on his defensive mobility, but that is the only question I have on his game. I think everything else has a chance to be high level (passing/shooting/rebounding/interior scoring/rim protection).

We were robbed of the chance to draft Edey, but since this is a stronger/deeper draft, Yang might be limited in how many teams are willing to take the risk of drafting a CBA player who doesn't clearly fit the modern pace oriented basketball most teams are use to.

Maybe the Jazz can do some finagling and move up from 43 to take him somewhere between 22 and 43, but I wouldn't risk it personally.

Edey is an irrelevant player idk. Wasn't really an important guy as a rookie despite being so old and didn't help the Grizzlies at all.

Yang has shed all of his body fat and still can't move at all, he's food in the NBA. There's no athletic upside left here.

Miles Byrd is clearly the guy the Jazz should be aiming for at 21, but he'll be gone by then. Same for Coward. I think we'll take Powell who I am... very conflicted on.

Yes, the only way for a teenager to improve athleticism is losing body fat.

Well, it's probably the easiest way and he still moves like he has lead in his shoes so idk, guessing he just can't play at all in the NBA.
Except that it's not. No NBA player is significantly fat enough for weight loss solely to make dramatic improvements to their athleticism. They do it through training and game reps.

What will improve it is him playing in a harder/faster league where he will be forced to work on his defensive footwork and mobility both in game and in training.

So he's in great shape and can't move at all despite spending the entire last year trying to be able to move but it's fine, don't worry about it.

When a prospect focuses a lot on improving a vital skill and completely fails at doing so, it makes me very wary.

Idk man, do you really think physique/strength acquisition and athletic skill/power acquisition are the same? And do you think those things stop improving once you turn 20?

No, but he's probably not going to get much more athletic than he is now if at all. Most players that are in ideal shape usually get less athletic as they age as people are at their peak physical ability around 18-22 years old before injury and illness and age cause them to physically decline.

Peak athletic performance is widely regarded to be 26-28 years old for trained professional athletes. I don't think you know what youre talking about

That is *peak performance* as their skill has generally increased a good amount and their athleticism has declined only slightly. Embiid was the most athletic he ever was in his entire life at 19 years old and was clearly his best at 27 years old despite having lost tons of athleticism (though Embiid is an extreme example of course)

But *peak athleticism* is usually very early on except for guys like Gobert or Jokic or Giannis who were in just terrible shape when drafted.

No, peak athletic performance, as in power/speed output, is highest in your mid to late 20s.

Using Embiid, a guy who has had his body wrecked by injuries, is a stupid example.

If you need verifiable proof of athletic peak, look at runners fast times for their careers. Typically will be in their mid to late 20s, with some peaking in their early 30s. Some are also exceptions in their early 20s, like 22-24, but none are at age 20

this explosion type athletes typically peak late 20's / 30
