What's new

My son is…

I got mine playing indoor soccer. The game was over... 30 seconds left. I was subbing for another team so I didn't know anyone.

We were up 6 - 1. I jumped up and headered the ball away. It was 45 feet away hitting the top net at let's play soccer.

The other guy didn't jump for the ball. He waited for me to come down. He drove his head like a weapon through my temple. I flipped and landed on my head. He straddled me and refused to apologize.

He got a yellow card. If he had punched me, I would not have had any long term issues. 3 years of depression, insomnia, no energy, no patience, different character, not telling dad jokes (i always tell dad jokes), all sorts of head aches and dizziness. No solutions by doctors.

No fun.

This absolutely sucks. I’m so sorry. People shouldn’t have to experience this. Hearing stories like this and having seen what my son already has gone through makes me hope he at some point just ends up becoming a runner like me. All this other crap. What’s the point.

You were a runner? What distance?

So would you say indoor soccer is more dangerous vs outdoor re concussion risk?

Since you’re dealing with limited space, congestion, less space to spread around, and also dealing with the walls, etc?
Probably. But I know Brian Dunseth well and he is on a committee of MLS players working to get protections and support for current and former players due to the amount of concessions they deal with.

Dunseth had a bunch of major head injuries during his career and we commiserated over things like brain fog (which sounds so lame until you deal with it) and even messed up things like thunderclaps where it feels like a brain freeze on a drill bit in the back of your skull.

Concussion is part of soccer just like football.

The game is a blast to play. It has brought me social, physical, and mental joys. But the risks suck.

I would guess multi-million-dollar contracts in the NFL is what most of them are thinking about. I played football for a couple years along with basketball, and even baseball for 2 years, and decided the impacts and nagging little injuries and the threat of bigger injuries just weren't worth it, as it wasn't that much fun anyway for me. I played multiple positions even, special teams, tight end, line backer, safety, etc. but never really enjoyed it. I got my bell rung a couple times, one time on serious concussion protocol, vomiting, couldn't walk right, the whole thing, for like 3 or 4 days. That was basically the end of it all and I stopped that **** and shifted my focus to basketball entirely. Of course then I blew out my knee middle of my jr year, so injuries can happen anywhere, but at least it wasn't as likely to be a concussion on the basketball court. But yeah, I imagine most of them see the dollar signs as sufficient payoff to take the risks. God our culture is so ****ed up.

Now the emoji makes more sense. Concussions with vomiting are severe. Hopefully no longer term issues.
From that experience, no. I spent one night in the hospital due to dehydration. They didn't feel it warranted anything other than that. Missed a couple days of school out of an abundance of caution. The vomiting was that evening after the game was over. I kept playing as it didn't take me down really and we realized it was worse than we thought when I threw up in the locker room afterward. Then we went to the hospital. But I never felt anything other than fuzzy headed and dizzy, and no long-term effects as far as I know. But who knows at that age, I mean maybe I would have been the next Warren Buffet except that concussion ****ed me up enough I lost that path or something. But nothing overt as long-term issues.
