Following Potential 2025 Draftees

I’m late, but just listened to the Leif-TJ pod. Interesting that TJ thinks Tre is definitely ahead of Ace/Kon/Fears on the Jazz board. I had always kind of thought that this was TJ’s personal opinion and not necessarily the FO’s opinion, but he was pretty direct. Right now it looks like Tre will be there and we’ll take him. I’m extremely annoyed by Leif and the other Tre stans, but I’d be ok with it.

FWIW, I actually think Fears has the most realistic path to stardom out of these guys. Also has the most risk of busting. His path to being an offensive hub is clear.

Kon and Tre have similar high end outcomes to me. Their realistic, high outcomes land them as borderline all stars. Kon looks like Bane, Tre more like Herro (sorry skin tone truthers). Either guy could go beyond that, but that gets into the unrealistic territory for which I don’t put too much weight onto. I like Kon’s medium and poor outcomes better, but I still think Tre is relatively safe. Just not my favorite type of archetype.

Great post. Though I'd nitpick a tad with the Tre / Herro comparison. Tre's length separates him from Herro in the "archetype" column, in my book.

Whether Philly is doing its due diligence or genuinely believes Bailey could fall to them at 3 remains to be seen. What’s clear is that the interest is real, and that Bailey’s draft night plans are still fluid.

Scoop B with another bomb. Ace Bailey could potentially fall to number 3? I wouldn't get my hopes up if I was PHI.

"In fact, Cooper has been a key figure in Bailey’s life since high school"

I now feel stupid. His agent has been with him since he was in high school. I mean, thats like infinity years, basically.
The AAU coach/manager is running his draft like the NBA is an AAU circuit. I got a feeling Ace is a guy you want on his second team not his first. Life gonna punch this young man in the mouth.

I can't remember this amount of stuff going on in a draft that felt like posturing. I have a lot of half baked theories in my head rn about what teams are trying to do.

Counterpoint: His management has been negging him this entire time. Once he gets real coaching around him he will blossom, a good strong franchise with an elite coach (like MIA for example) would love to take a chance on him.

Gonna be honest....I don't think we have a "Jazz culture" that is good for Ace. I think if he landed here it will enable his poor habits.

I think there is a blame pie for this approach. He would need to get better people around him and buy in to be what he needs to be. He doesn't want that imo. I think that's why he's cool with the approach. He may change his tune after getting pummeled in the league for a year or he may not.

I know MP Jr. is used a lot... what if MP Jr. went to a team lead by Jordan Poole rather than Jokic and Malone (opposite of a yes man)?

Issue I have with that is Tre doesn't do anything with his length. Very bad rebounder, stocks, and defense. I suppose the length gives him potential, but rarely does it ever pan out that way. I actually think Herro was a better defensive prospect because he was tougher/more physical. Besides that, I just don't think Tre has ever played defense in his life. He's never had to, and I don't think it's a switch you can flip. Like most things, defense requires skill level and I think Tre's lack of production in the peripheral areas indicates that he doesn't have them. I'm just not very optimistic about his defense.

Offensively Tre is still a great prospect. If he can develop a more physical driving game, he can end up like Herro was last year and that's pretty great. He was probably a top 15ish offensive player. Attacking the hoop is kind of a rare skill to develop though. I think 2024 Herro would be something like a median outcome for Tre whereas a 2025 Herro would be a high end outcome (as it was for Herro).

Jazz should trade up to #4 with CHA and secure Tre Johnson. They're Charlotte. You can't trust them to be coherent. Throw them a bone and end the drama. Let the Hornets deal with trades for Ace and Fears from #5.

Barlowe said he's continuing to hear Riley is cooking everybody in workouts and a team told him he's in their lottery. Said he heard from a team executive that he compared him to a shiftier Caris Levert (who is already pretty damn shifty).
Riley cooked in his Jazz workout too. My source said "he’s super tough".

Not tough as the traditional sense but as the Gen Z sense of he’s a hooper.

Just playing devil's advocate, I don't actually fully believe in this......but I don't think an 18 year old really knows what he wants. Right now is the time for Sharife's dad to pop off. If the Jazz actually drafted him, the dynamic would change. The team and agent are no longer enemies and instead working partners. I think there's a good chance all of this stuff fades away after the draft because there really are no cards to play from the agent side.

I guess my actual stance on all of this is that if the Jazz were planning on drafting Ace initially, they should draft him anyways. And if part of the justification for drafting him is you think that he's just been mishandled and you can change that, I can respect that. I like Ace more in the "ball of clay" sense than I do "he's Kevin Durant" sense.

I just think that if you arrive at 5 and Ace is still on the board, it is a very good day. If you get there and Tre Johnson is there? That's good too. VJ? We are finally starting that lean into defense.

It would be really hard to screw this up. However, if the Hornets draft Kon? I'm glad I won't be making the choice for the Jazz.
