Yes, I was raised by my father, who fought fascism in the Second World War. And I earned multiple degrees in history. Specifically studying 20th century fascism, and its ideological/racial superiority roots. So I understand and recognize fascism when it raises its ugly head. History INFORMS the present, PJF. In this country, that specie of fascism can be called “Americanism”. Just as Hitler’s publicly stated aim was, in his own words, “to make Germany great again!”, including by exterminating “the un pure races”, so is Trump singling out “the other” in typical fascist “us vs. them” style. All fascists create scapegoats. In Trump’s case, it’s “undocumented human beings”, but it goes far beyond. For example, his Nazi loving aide Stephen Miller just said the Democratic Party is a “domestic terrorist organization”! Trump refers to the press as “the enemy of the people”. All these disgusting statements by Trump and his lackeys proves one thing to me: My dad, and all his brothers, who fought against fascism 80+ years ago, would be labeled “the enemy within” by Trump, by Miller, by MAGA.

So, yes, a good upbringing by a good man, and a good education in the history of Western civilization, saw to it that I still lean in the direction of a moral universe. I refuse to give up on compassion, on caring for others, on respecting hard won human knowledge, on all the things that inhumane monsters like Donald Trump would destroy.

(And yes, guys, I know he’s a troll, but it’s good to take this opportunity to show PJB what he’s a actually supporting, his ignorant anti-American agenda is disgusting, his desire to elevate the darker angels of human nature an appalling central trait of the MAGA movement).

Try being a human being, PJB. You might like it…..

The cruel dictates of RFK Jr. proving to be too much for CDC officials dedicated to science. Next thing you know, Trump will be appointing a chemtrails expert as Director of the National Science Foundation. Or maybe a flat Earther. The entire elevation of and insistent promotion(You WILL accept these facts, or Trump will come for you) of fake science, fake history, etc., is common enough in authoritarian leaders, but this may rank as one of the best example of a nation crumbling from outright stupidity ever seen.

Kennedy himself is likely mentally ill. We really should be concerned. He’s been hinting he will announce in Sept. that the study he launched to determine the cause of autism in April, will prove vaccines cause autism. Kennedy is deranged. Doesn’t need to be institutionalized, it’s not that kind of mental illness, but we have a quack at the head of America’s public health.

These resignations are what they want. It makes them look weak to the mouth-breathers who keep Trump in power and it is the simplest way for them to put sycophants in place. It's playing into their hands. Just like when academics left the country, that's what they want. Academics are among those who can put up a legitimate front against fascism. Leaving the country is just handing it over to the fascists. I'm not impressed.

Quite a few ****icized Timothy Snyder, and his wife, both Yale academics, for taking positions at the University of Toronto, and moving to Canada. Both said they did so, in part, to allow their young son to not grow up in a fascist country. Snyder got a prestigious seat in the history dept.

Research scientists are in a different situation. They depend on grants. I just saw a story, forget the university, announcing they will not accept grad students in one of their science departments. Young scholars, in particular, are faced with choosing another career path, or look abroad.

And that’s the case with veteran researchers as well.

Yeah, it is understandable when historians, and scholars of fascism move, and are accused of abandoning America when we need their voices the most.

The fired director of the CDC said there were two things Kennedy could ask her, that she would need to refuse. Standing up for what you believe in, and refusing to resign, I have no argument with that decision.

On a personal level I don't question them at all. You have to make the best decision for yourself and your family in every situation. Nothing, not politics nor religion nor anything else should change that fact. It doesn't change the fact that it's still exactly what the fascists want. Hitler called the academics traitors, and the only reason he hunted then down was for what they could be forced to contribute to the war effort. In Germany many stayed thinking that they could sway the way their country was headed and only left when it was nearly too late for them. The physicists were largely among the last to get out and were the ones most actively hunted for their ability to help develop new weapons. So I don't blame them individually at all for making decisions that are best for them and their families. Hell, if I had the means I would have taken my full extended family and fled to Germany already. No, I'm just pointing out, it's exactly what the fascists want.

But being selfish in my own right, and wanting this scourge eradicated from my country, I hope those who have a real voice in this, who have a real chance of mounting a resistance, will choose to put country, meaning me lol, first and stick around to do what they can to add their voices to those with power to effect change. They have the means to get out, and personally I will never begrudge them that. Millions more just plain don't. Who speaks for them when those with a real voice are gone?

Fascists and wannabe fascists throughout history have found that answer. The answer is, no one.
