Following Potential 2026 Draftees

Presti’s entire legacy is built off of the Clippers being forced to give them SGA and their entire draft capital for the future.

He’s good but he’s had a lot of stuff fall into his lap. You can say at least he took advantage of that stuff sure.

Presti takes swings and is willing to make bold trades. He knew Paul George didn't want to be in OKC, and he traded for PG anyway. Then he got rewarded for it. He knows it's okay to miss in the draft, but he picks guys who will have an impact if they hit. Presti missed on Pokusevski, Ousmane Dieng, Darius Bazley, and a few others. Topic is struggling with health issues. He moved on from Giddey. But when his guys hit, they really hit -- Chet, JDub, Dort, etc.

OKC is probably going to win 70 games this year and go back to the Finals.

What bold trades has he made?

What bold trades has he made?

Paul George and Carmelo Anthony. He got Paul George for Victor Oladipo and Domantas Sabonis. He got Carmelo Anthony for Enes Kanter basically.

Then he got PG to extend with OKC (when PG said he wouldn't extend with Indiana) and later traded him to the Clippers for a historic haul.

He got George for Oladipo and Sabonis. Hardly a hard decision to make.

It was bold in the sense that PG told everyone he wanted to be in LA. It's similar to the Raptors trading for Kawhi even though Kawhi didn't want to be in Toronto.

Then getting PG to extend in OKC enabled the Thunder to trade him to the Clippers a year later.

How did the Thunder get Paul George?

You don’t have to be bold to be good. Trading for PG when he didn’t say he’d re-sign was pretty bold, though.

You can also afford to be bold when you amass so many draft assets.

It is not advisable to neg on the executive who’s success is totally unrivaled in the modern era:
-drafted three MVPs in consecutive years (no #1 picks) + a DPOY in that same stretch
-traded for a future MVP
-amassed an insane pick portfolio after losing KD for nothing and being forced to trade Harden for scraps that amounted to nothing.
-cannot be understated he is GREAT at talent evaluation. Oladipo (acquired right as Ibaka started to decline) and Sabonis weren’t considered amazing players when they were traded, but they became all-stars (borderline franchise players) and in the end the Pacers came out very much ahead after trading their franchise player.

Like KD walking? Like ownership dumping Harden?
Westbrook did a lot more than most stars do for their small market. He convinced Paul George to stay.

What's harder: Making a trade, or convincing a star who had LA courting him to stay in Oklahoma? It's the latter.

Then George got traded to the Clippers for a ransom not because of Presti, but because Kawhi Leonard was only going to sign if they got George. Any GM could have cooked in that scenario. It's yet again another situation where Presti landed on the right side of star-induced pressure moves.

Then James Harden told the Rockets get me Westbrook or trade me. Presti, yet again lands on the right side of a star demand trade.

Yes, he’s been smart but also a lucky bastard.
