OT: This is breaking .... not yet news ..
The AAU will begin mandatory background checks on all adult coaches, volunteers, and staff. The training to interact with the kids will also be ramped up.
Why is this important? Because AAU should be about the kids, and along with that, their safety.
I don’t mean to turn this into a PSA, but when you look back on the history of basketball recruiting, the AAU circuit has turned into one of the more sketchy areas of the sport. Without playing all along the grueling spring and summer AAU circuit, kids cannot get recognized by big colleges. The culture surrounding AAU thus became inundated with hanger-ons, shoe companies, and other people who are interested in their future of young potential superstars. With a background check and thorough inspection of those who allowed to be involved with the kids, AAU as an organization can better protect kids from improper relationships.
Along with the hanger-ons, there has been a new epidemic in sports — sexual predators. Apart from Sandusky, Memphis AAU guru and former president Bobby Dodd was accused of sex abuse last year, causing the organization to review their practices and regulations. Dodd has still not been charged with any crime, but the AAU really wanted to make sure they do the due diligence in making sure the kids are safe. I saw this type of review happen first hand at a university in our commonwealth, where a long-tenured women’s sport coach was fired based on pure (but true and constant) rumors of sexual innuendo being hinted at towards his players.
These problems are not jokes, and the AAU and made the right move in requiring background checks. Whether this person is a former offender or notorious hanger-on, their interaction with the young athletes can be regulated properly. We saw plenty of backlash against John Wall’s AAU people, but they also happened to be his mentors and put him on a proper path.
There are good and bad folks in AAU, and hopefully this new procedure will get rid of some of the bad..
