Famed cyclist Lance Armstrong is facing the loss of seven Tour de France titles and his championship legacy after ending his fight against charges of illegal doping.

Armstrong's move prompted the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency on Friday to slap a lifetime ban on the athlete and strip him of his wins dating to 1998, though there is a question of whether the organization has the authority to take such action.

"If I thought for one moment that by participating in USADA's process I could confront these allegations in a fair setting and -- once and for all -- put these charges to rest, I would jump at the chance," Armstrong said in a statement Thursday.

"I refuse to participate in a process that is so one-sided and unfair."...

I don't follow this sport but of course I knew Lance Armstrong as a legendary athlete and I admire his fight against cancer. But now he says that he won't fight against the doping charges anymore.

This is his official statement. If he is really innocent like he says, I think this is a big mistake what he's doing.

I don't think he's innocent (nor are 90% of the top athletes, imo) but he's right about the witch hunt/media.

How many times does this guy need to fight this?

This is big IMO from the article:

Armstrong has said in court documents that he has never had "a single positive test" in the 500 to 600 drug tests he's taken in his more than two decades in cycling.

Don't you think he would have been caught by now? It wasn't like he was some one year wonder like Melky. The dude had 7 STRAIGHT years of winning. He was probably the most tested man in his sport. I would think that had he been using PEDs that he would have tested positive sometime in his career. Either that or he's just too far ahead of the testers to be caught.

Sounds like a nasty witch hunt to me. Get off his back.

PKM is right: 'everybody' is doping. If you strip him of his titles and give them to the next doper, what's the point?

There are statements made by cyclists in the 1940s about how everybody was doping. You think they've really done the necessary things to clean that up? If you do, then you need to look into it more.

But, why give up against USADA, I searched about them, they don't seem like the most trustworthy institution.

In short, they don't lose their battles. And, they certainly would have dragged 10 or more cyclists into hearings and made them tell all about Lance's doping. Lance didn't want that to happen.

I am so happy he was stripped of these. I'm sorry but the guy was deified for winning titles that it quite obviously (unless you're a naive clown) took him PED's to win. I get others take on it. They all dope. He was tested more than anyone else but they never caught him. I get it, I really do. But listen, I'm here to tell you now, the guy ****ing doped.

God

I also have very strong opinions on this subject despite not having any real information!

He has 10 former teammates ready and willing to testify against him right? I get that this isn't definitive proof. I think he doped to be honest. I agree with PKM that a lot of these top athletes do.

Hmm some sources say, USADA had strong proofs about him and they told him that they will publish them to the public if he continued to deny the charges. Otherwise they would sweep the things under the carpet for the sake of his great public image.

His name was about to be dragged through the mud big time - apparently 10 former team mates were set to testify against him.

Now they don't get to testify and he gets to play the victim while maintaining his innocence. Shrewd move actually.

The USADA doesn't give a flying crap about anyone's image. If they did, they wouldn't have gone on this witch hunt.
