Jazz back in talks with Josh Howard

I had much higher hopes when we first signed Howard. I honestly feel he still has talent, but he seemed like he was trying too hard, and often not performing. He had a good streak before he was injured, and then it was downhill from there.

I wish him the best, just not in a Jazz uni...
 
Yeah, he really did have his good moments.

But any Jazz man who bumbles the ball around through traffic for 20 seconds and decides to shoot instead of pass makes me want to die. And thats basically what he turned into near the end of the year. Worse off, the playoffs.
 
I will seriously punch a kitten if the Jazz re-sign this shmuck. Like wtf. He's a rich man's Roger Braille at best.

That's a good description of the downhill jazzgasm mentioned. I was OK with Howard until he had to have surgery. He became something of an ineffective chucker when he came back.

But I like the "rich man's Roger Braille" comparison. That one is brilliant. Although in defense of J. Howard, he was a good teammate and well-liked/respected in the locker room. I don't think you could say the same about Braille once he turned into Dick Dastardly.
 
i would argue with the contention that he had a good streak before the injury. what that means is he had a few high scoring (but inefficient) games where he attacked the paint and inspired a bunch of "josh howard is really coming on" talk from boler and harpring.

here are his march games before the injury:
- 10 points on 15 shots
- 10 points on 9 shots
- 14 points on 14 shots
- 12 points on 10 shots
- 2 points on 6 shots
- 15 points on 10 shots (the good one of the bunch)
- 9 points on 8 shots
- 6 points on 12 shots
- 10 points on 12 shots
- 4 points on 6 shots
- 12 points on 10 shots

all told, he was getting .93 point per shot in the 11 games heading into his injury.

So he was was scoring 2 points on 46.5% of his shots (including FTs) during the streak. For the season he had 1.03 points per shot, and that includes the abysmal play towards the end of the season, and it is higher than the .84 and .75 points per shot Jefferson and Harris had during the playoffs. Not great, not horrible, but I wasn't referring to his scoring (or at least, not only his scoring). And ****, Jeremy Evans scored 1.48 points per shot, the highest on the team. Lets start him and sign him to a max deal!

At the start of the season, Howard played ok, but it took him a while to get into the flow of the system. Watching the games, I saw a tenative, selfish Howard start to turn into what looked like good team player. He was passing, playing good D, not over-forcing things, and getting to the hoop, taking open shots and making things happen when the offense needed it without forcing things. Was he an all-star? No. But he was starting to play well. After the injury, it was like that all disappeared, and he played worse than he did at the start of the season. If he had not been injured, we may have seen a different Howard the rest of the season.

Which is decent if he had say a veterans minimum contract, and chilled on the bench in the event that one of the wings got hurt.

It is Mr. Gasm to you good sir, and my point was, PPS isn't everything, otherwise Jeremy Evans (1.48) would have a max contract and Kirilenko (1.39 last year with Jazz IIRC) would still be a starter for us.

And besides, based on his positioning, with a minimum contract, by your estimates it could have been worse (125 other players in the league with a lower PPS). How many of those players made mores $$$ than Howard? I love it when people come up with one stat to show a player sucks. BFD. At least bring it with Dean Oliver's TOTAL offensive rating, incorporating FG/FT, assists, turnovers and offensive rebounds.

huh???

i repeat: 353rd. meaning that the average NBA team has 11-12 players that are better than him. which is horrible for anybody, but downright unacceptable when your role is to be the scorer of the second unit.

c'mon...

I repeat..... that I said he would be an ok player, playing for the veterans minimum and chilling on the bench.
