The Girlfriend Experience

Anyone see this? My friend gave it 8.5 out of 10 and I laughed since I heard very, very little about it (which is saying something since Soderbergh did it) and I told him he's a moron (which he is when it comes to movies) and that imdb has it at an average of 5.8 out of 10. So anyone?

I didn't watch it. As far as I can tell it was notable only for the fact that it cast a pornstar in the lead role.

It's a decent flick. Definitely not an 8.5 out of 10 however. For a porn star, Sasha Grey is a decent actress, and she's quite easy on the eyes as well.

I'm still waiting to have this "Girlfriend Experience."

Considering it's a movie about an escort, you are definitely not still waiting to have THIS girlfriend experience.

Also, I watched it one night on Netflix via my Xbox. I remember it being somewhat enjoyable, but nothing special. I'd recommend Sasha Grey's other work over this effort.

I just watched Sasha Grey's appearance on Entourage. I wouldn't have high hopes for an entire movie that she has to carry.

Nice

For those of you courting a girl, it's hard to resist temptation, and eventually, you'll find yourselves having "the girlfriend experience." I know this from experience.

You know, they say living together before marriage results in more breakups than living together WHILE married. Telling statistic, yes? Get married before having "fun", it's the only way. Thanks for doing what you do.

The only reason I'd give it any hope is because of Soderbergh. But when it gets a 5.8 on imdb, no thanks.

IMDB rating is nonsense.

Frankly, how good is Soderbergh really? A lot of his resume rests on stuff like the Ocean's franchise (and Ocean's Twelve is the kind of movie that every director should be trying to disown) and Erin Brockovich.

And Traffic. And The Limey. And Out of Sight. And Sex, Lies & Videotape. Bubble's supposedly solid though I've not seen it. He has a good resume. He simply goes out there every once in a while with stuff like this and it's imperfect.

And what rating is good in your opinion?

None. Any attempt to quantify film criticism and boil it down from arguments sucks.

Some lists are better than others because they lay out specific criteria and limit voting to only people who have real knowledge.

IMDB is the worst.

I usually just look at Ebert and to a lesser extent Travers myself. However, imdb, in my opinion is a pretty good gauge. You're obviously going to have your fanboys who drive the mean up but you'll also have, to a lesser degree, your naysayers on the opposite end of the spectrum (like you with Nolan and Inception perhaps) who may score it lower just to do so. I'm not saying you would but there's certainly people who would. And everyone else will for the most part score a film as they've objectively viewed it.

The biggest plus imdb has going for it is that thousands upon thousands of people vote. I'll agree that there are many, many, many movies ranked retardedly high (all three LOT Rings movies come to mind) and I equate that to the internet. Those who've signed up on the site are more often than not a younger generation many of whom (live in their parents basement and) suck at the teet of technology-driven and/or action movies. Inception's a prime example. I loved the movie. Don't get me wrong but...

all in all, when tens of thousands of people are voting and give a movie a score of 7.8, that score's probably fairly accurate, whether they were intelligent movie-goers or not. I'm not saying it's a bulls-eye. But the standard deviation in such a case is pretty small and thus, the score is a fairly good indicator.
