Why do we restrict the voting rights of felons?

Are you being serious? Lol, I didn't even know this was controversial or debatable. The GOP has written off winning the black and/or Hispanic vote.

For example, while Romney was talking about self deportation and saying he'd veto the dream act, Obama was instructing his administration to stop deporting productive citizens and kids who had been here most of their lives (after republicans filibustered the dream act).

Another example... When republican nutjobs in Arizona made the infamous "papers please" law, Romney said it was a model for the rest of the nation and said he'd sign it as president if it came to his desk. Meanwhile, the Obama administration sued Arizona and got the law overturned.

We could go on and on here. You don't get so far behind in the polls as Romney is with blacks and hispanics, unless you have totally written those voting blocks off. If he hadn't written them off, we would have seen major effort on his part to win them back.

And rather than try and win some of it back by campaigning for them and supporting some of their issues, instead he is saying he'd veto the dream act and praising the papers please laws.

The same thing can be said about blacks. You mentioned that they have long voted for dems. Well what has the GOP done to try to sway them? If they aren't supporting any of their issues, aren't campaigning to them, then you have to agree they have written them off.

I think it's pretty clear, they've written that voting block off. Rather than try to earn their votes, they'd rather disenfranchise them. And if that is true, you can expect felons voting to be a target in the near future.

The GOP has completely written off the Felon vote. Big mistake if you ask me as the felon population is growing substantially and will be pivotal in Ohio, Florida and all other swing states. I can see writing off the rapists and murderers, but all of the felons... cmon... not smart.

This is what I don't get at all. If African Americans would take a step back from all the sound bites and rhetoric, what have dems done for them? Look at where they are living. Look at the crime in their neighborhoods. Look at their schools. Look at their income levels. Most "black" neighborhoods are in mostly blue states (NY, PA, Mass, Cali). How exactly has voting democrat helped them?

Seeing how the dems went after African Americans, and how a large majority of them are now dependent on the government to survive really makes me worry about how they are now targeting Hispanics. As a Hispanic, we are better than that and I worry that we will buy into the crap dems feed us and turn us into African Americans that depend on the government.

The path to success in this country is hard work, a valuable education (not all degrees are created equal), and the ability to be independent. The problem with democrats is they want you to believe the path to success is redistribution (ie, not hard work, but get yours from someone else), garbage education (ie, social sciences. What a worthless degree. You literally have no skills, other than teaching and government jobs with a social science degree. Talk about making people reliant upon you. Get this degree, then you will have to work for me, because the degree in itself is worthless), and to be dependent on others. You can't afford healthcare, you can't afford a business, if we don't loan you the money, you can't afford a house, you didn't make your business, we all did together, etc, etc, etc.

Alot of the rising stars int he GOP are people like Bobby Jindal, Marco Rubio and Suzanna Martinez. I am hedging my bets that they will edge out people like Bachman and Santorum.
