Now that you mention it, his mother did write a book. . . .. been years since I flipped a few pages and decided it was a mother's idyllic odessey in her own mind. . . . .

I've never had the book.. only read things it supposedly says..
I did find what I quoted above kind of funny, though.. how one's perception will skew another's view opinion to either enlightened or an idyllic odessey.

I read and copied the Manuscript Found from a photostat copy in the Salt Lake Library special collections in 1978, and made a list of correspondences between it and the Book of Mormon. It is as I recall a naked fantasy written poorly or sketchily alleging a grand panorama of history. Anyone who has ever done any serious attempt at writing will readily admit that taking the Solomon Spaulding manuscript and transforming it into the Book of Mormon would be a huge undertaking, probably requiring just ignoring the starting text if not burning it to clear the mind for a fresh start.

This is where this theory has always lost ground. The author above is losing credibility and seems to be grinding an ax not reporting facts.

In my 1978 list of correspondences, I had a number of simple direct opposites, and a larger number of comparable assertions which were factually different, such as the wandering faithful band of immigrants coming from Rome, across the Atlantic, in ship as opposed to from Jerusalem into the Indian Ocean and sailing eastward.

Things that do compare in terms of being the same class of factual assertions, are the claim of two warring factions and the fascination with military tales of battle.

Manuscript Found has no religious doctrine, and only a few items of cultural comment. One being a manner of marriage that the Moonies must have copied. . . .an annual lining up of marriageable boys and girls and assigning them rather than letting them choose, with the "extra" girls given to some boys as second wives. The Book of Mormon does not have that, and instead briefly touches on polygamy only being an exceptional case the Lord may command some people.

well, I know people who are reverent and respectful. Actually, the book was a gift from my own mother to me on my birthday once, and I was sorta embarrassed she was trying to make such a fuss over me, and I probably rushed to that impression because that was how I thought my mother was. . . . .lol.

you remember the story I told you about how she'd take my writing from my trash, unwad it or scotch tape it back together, and keep it in her file???? I'm lucky she didn't publish that as scripture.

(let me say, I do or say nothing to try to discredit the Mormon faith.. rather, I enjoy seeing/reading both sides of any hotly debated subject.)

Of my Mormon friends, one mistake I think they make (jmo) is trying to 'prove' outside of any reasonable doubt, using logic, the fact the LDS church is the 'True Church.'
I've often told them that, imo, communicating faith in your beliefs can be far more compelling and less exhausting than the trivial dissecting of doctrine ... across multiple denominations, multiple time periods/renditions, etc..

So this is another case where you've shown yourself much better educated somehow than I am. I had never heard of "Hiram Abiff", but there is a lot about him in the google queue.

I was referring to my own flippant treatment of Lucy Mack Smith's book. . . . . in contrast to say the awe my mother must have had about the mother of "Prophet".
