What's new

Stop calling Kanter a center.

You're probably right which is why defensive adjustments still take place. But if Kanter is playing against the Rockets the other night there is no way he is guarding Dwight Howard...who is the quintessential NBA center.

Among Houston's starting five, who do you see Kanter guarding? I don't see anyone but Howard to put him on.

Harden, nothing like a good hip toss to start the game off on the right tone against Houston.

Kanter would have to guard Terrence Jones in that situation.

I'd rather have Gobert, Evans, Marvin, Jefferson, and even Biedrins anchor the defense than slug feet.
Kanter's problems don't stem from being slow-footed. I'd argue he's fairly nimble, given his size. His decision making is dreadful, however. Overplaying, getting caught out of position, etc.

As for the OP, I think it's pretty clear that it's hard to define players in today's NBA using traditional positions (1-5). I prefer guards-wings-bigs in defining players. The issue with those 3 is defining players like LeBron, Melo, Derrick Williams, Beas, even Marvin Williams (that is, tweeners). Adding a 4th position, forward helps (guard-wing-forward-big...more or less 1/2-2/3-3/4-4/5 in traditional positions). It's rare that you find a lineup without one of each of those 4 on the court at any time.

You can define the Jazz players pretty easily with these 4:

Guard: Trey, Burks, JLIII, Garrett, Clark
Wing: Gordo, Rush, RJ
Forward: Marvin, Jeremy, Harris
Big: Favors, Kanter, Gobert, Biedrins

I think people consider Kanter the center because he's 6'11 and Favors is 6'10. I consider both of them PFs. Gobert is our center.

Like I said even before Kanter was drafted.......................He does not have the leaping ability to guard the rim period. If we draft him as a power forward fine, but he will never be a good defensive center.

I've come to like the Jazz more than Kanter at this point and I like Kanter less and less each day(not only about basketball).

So I wouldn't mind much if the Jazz trade him one day.

Was listening to the Blazer broadcast and they said Kanter had the worst total on/off rating in the entire league at -198...and that was at the beginning of the game. So, yeah, I need a new avatar.

And your point is?
Isn't the guy like 22 years old, and was thrown into a starting role on a very bad team?

Do you think it is a coincidence the team looks a hundred times better with Marvin starting? I didn't want to believe it either, but outside of a passable 15 footer, Kanter gives you nothing.

Teams haven't scouted Marvin either.
Nobody in the league expected Marvin Williams to start at PF this season.
I like Marvin and all, but to say he's better than Kanter is a stretch.

I guess it's a "pass" because it certainly can't be a shot...not when it hits nothing but the top of the backboard
